Maia Campbell, the once beautiful star of LL Cool J’s “In the House” is now incarcerated in the big house.
The 33-year-old daughter of author BeBe Moore Campbell, starred in numerous TV sitcoms and bit roles in movies such as Poetic Justice alongside Janet Jackson and Tupac. Like most washed up young stars with no job skills, Maia briefly dabbled in porn and then street drugs.
Maia was arrested on July 5th in Santa Monica, CA after being videotaped in a drug-induced haze. She remains incarcerated on $40,000 bond at the same facility where actress Lindsay Lohan was jailed. This is her 2nd arrest. It is believed that Maia suffers from bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

I keep seeing people talk about her mental illness as if that’s an excuse to be a drug addict. There are lots of people with mental illness that don’t smoke crack and live a stable life with the help of taking their Rx medicine (not abusing it though).
With that said…. Who was she in Poetic Justice?

That is very sad! I had a coworker who was bipolar and she had the whole office (75 people) paranoid she was gonna go postal! SHe mixed her with alcohol so it was even worse but I still felt sorry for her (while i kept my keys and purse on my at all times just in case i had to run)

That video that is circulating is said to be old, as she has been locked up for a month and the video just appeared a few weeks ago.
Her family has her child.
When it comes to the mentally ill, there is only so much one can do unless the person is a threat to themselves or others. When you think about the anti-psych meds, there are side effects, and then the give you more dugs to counter act that, and they don’t make you feel good. Crazy people may be crazy, but they know the deal when it comes to how those meds make you feel.
With Bi-Polar Schizophrenia, it’s hard to get an accurate dose of meds, because they take so long to show their effectiveness. Also, insurance companies are cutting back on what they will and will not pay for when it comes to those meds, so they are reverting back to the old school cheap meds, like Thorazine, that make you really zombie like. Nobody wants to be a zombie, so they just self medicate with stuff liek crack and weed and even heroin, and meth.
I really feel sorry that the mentally ill are exploited and made fun of, Crazy from the RAY-J show, Kat Stacks,Karrine Steffans, and Maia Campbell.
Unless a mentally ill person is a threat to someone else it’s not a lot a family can do. Some mentally ill people self-medicate with drugs and alcohol. They truly believe that this is helpful and they are acting normal. Maia’s mother was very outspoken about trying to get her the help she needed but she would run away for days/months/weeks at a time.
Her father has also tried to get her help and she has refused. Her family takes care of the children also.
Poor boo boo. But maybe she can get some help now.

*child* This is also true if you have a loved one who is very sick but not taking their meds. Unless the person is incapacitated they are allowed to make the decisions regarding their care even if it’s not the right choice.

Hello All. Poor thing. When it comes to the ‘mentally ill’, I don’t believe in all this crap, i.e. biopolar, clinically depressed, etc, unless one is born mentally challenged. When seemingly sane people ‘go off the deep end’ they have lost their spiritual strength and guidance, meaning, they have no personal relationship with God. Their personal relationship is with the devil, with evil, which can be drugs, sex, crimes, etc. “An idle mind is the workshop of the devil.” I can understand if one ‘goes off’ after losing a loved one, especially a child but again, this should be temporary. After all, how does that saying go: God never gives you more than you can bare.
Just call me butter ’cause I’m on a roll today. I fell at work last Thur and busted my hip reaching for a book, at home on workman’s comp, first time in 33 yrs. It could have been worse, I could have broken it! You should see the bruise, big as Montana! So, with all this time on my hands, ain’t no telling what I’ll post. After all, free speech is a mother!Peaceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
That’s a shame! Hopefully it will help her to get her life back on track. She needs some good people in her life to help her.

Didn’t her family have her placed in rehab after that video of her in the car aired????? I coulda sworn the family came to her aid, and stated that she was doing much better.

PAHairston, I like you, but it’s that type of thinking that causes people like Maia to continute to roam the streets. It’s also that type of thinking that causes mental health care budgets to get cut, and those who really need help can’t get it.
I’m all for spiritual strength, but I know that somewhere deep within that spiritual strengthening, God has got to tell you to take your crazy a** to the DR!

Its true that there are mentally ill people who dont abuse drugs, but when they do its worse when they are taking drugs and not taking their meds. Its even worse for the ones who do take their meds and then mix it with drugs. I didnt watch the video because Im still trying to get over the first one. I hope she gets the help she needs. I wonder if her previous co stars have reached out to her to help

@ PAHairston, your comment leaves me perplexed but most of all saddens me greatly. I didn’t know that there was a expiration date to depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. Idle minds are the devil’s workshop, sure; according to the old adage, but idle minds can come in the form of ‘normal’ minds as well as chemically unbalanced minds. Bipolarism and depression as ‘temporary’. These things work differently in different people. And one can be of sound mind and as close to God and as spiritual as they might be and STILL be affected by mental illness. Mindsets like yours hold Black folk back from realizing that yes, we too suffer from illness and illness can be treated and you can be a Good Christian and still take your meds (mostly because you HAVE to) in order to stay ‘on the level’ and ‘normal’. And indeed God will never give you more than you can BEAR, I agree. But even the most saintliest of saints have a yearly checkup with their doctor.

I participated in a simulation of schizophrenia. It’s very annoying, there are voices on top of voices, telling you to do things, or not do things, and all you can do is hope they stop.
During the simulation, we had to do things like read and comprehend and answer questions, inteview one another, do word searches, and by the time it was all over, we were all mentally drained. Trying to keep you attention focused on the task at home, ignoring those voices that tell you you smell like sh*t and that you are the one, at the same time!
Yeah, I’d smoke some crack, too!

@ardentphotog, THANK YOU for your words. I so agree with you. We can be strong, we can fast and pray and believe but sometimes (because God gives you common sense) you just have to take medication, be it homeopathic or prescribed. If God deemed it so for us to be completely immune to mental illness or any kind of illness then the threat of us getting sick or the possibility of us ‘falling off’ wouldn’t happen. Not everyone all the time is on the mountain-top getting their faith tested or standing ready to proclaim a miracle. Not all of us are meant to be the miraculous proof of God’s divine healing. Some of us have other courses to follow and those who do, take Tylenol or Xanax or Zoloft and keep it moving, yet spiritually-minded and God-praising. It is what it is, but to say that mental illness is temporary, SMH. Anyone and everyone is susceptible and there IS NO expiration date.

Last I heard there was some type of intervention. I guess it didn’t work. This is so sad. I truly believe Montana Fishburne show signs of going in the same direction.

I thought that schizophrenia couldn’t be cured, only treated? How you do a simulation of something that can’t be completely understood? Wouldn’t that be speculation of what schizophrenia could be like?

Diana Ross years back, portrayed a Black female suffering from schizophrenia. She did an amazing job and her role (at least for me) brought about awareness concerning the disease. Lisa Nicole Carson is rumored to suffer from it; resulting in her disappearance from the acting scene. The last I read/heard of her she’s doing well and is slowly making her way back to the spotlight. @leapyearpisces, thanks for bringing Lisa up. She’s another example of how you can deal and cope as she’s been receiving treatment.
Thickums I’m guessin it was around the 10th. I used alot of hair wax and curled the top so you can imagine how much that curlin iron was starting to singe!
Now that I look at it it looks like one of those damn onion appetizers that looks like a big flower bloomin!
I think the main issue with mental illness is that alot of times, it takes year for people to get the right type of medication combination that will actually help them, and from what I understand it takes time for the medicines to get in your system before they even take affect and alot of times, when they do, I heard people do not want to take them because it leaves them in a “zombie” state, where they feel numb and like they are not alive. Mental illness is not a disease in which people can deal with by themselves, you have to have a good support team.
Schizophrenia is also what got Donny Hathaway as well. My dad’s sister lost her bout with it three years ago, she set herself and her house on fire.

@Ms.No No they likely have given her a psych eval and that’s why she is still there. It is better right now to leave her locked up where she can dry out from the drugs and get treatment then leave her out on the street. My ex is locked up and I was fighting for them to keep him because that’s his only chance to get help. Once they are released it is hell to have them put back in treatment
One more time….as I say in every post about her…where is this child’s FAMILY? I know her mom is deceased. Where are her mama folks at? Aunties, cousins, her sibs…etc. Where are her father folks at? If I am not mistaken this girl is from Philly…why has she been out in Cali all this time???
I blame her family and my heart BREAKS.
My baby sister is bipolar and also has a drug issue to boot. But I know if my momma stops roaming this earth (her father is already deceased, God bless him) our aunties will be the ones issuing tough love and me and my other sister will assume whatever responsibility is needed. I have one aunt (my mom sister who is 10 months apart from my momma) who has been trying to get her hands on my sister FOR YEARS. She is convinced the girl needs a swift kick in DA AZZ as well as medical intervention.
Doesn’t the Mother of all black actors have Schizo? (Tina Turner mother in what’s love; Tupac mother in Poetic Justic “Lucky shut the **** up and put the god damn Cigarette out”) they say she has had episodes on set. But she able to manage it to the point that she stays working and no one really knew how bad it was until she started to speak on it. I think she may have written a book about it.
