Aimee Michael Gets 36 Years for Easter Sunday Crash Deaths
Aimee Michael was sentenced to 36 years in prison for causing a horrific crash that claimed the lives of 5 people including 3 children.
Prosecutor Tanya Miller revealed Friday what the judge had kept from the jurors at trial: Police found a weed joint in the ashtray of the BMW and it had Aimee Michael’s DNA on it.
Her mother, Shiela, previously pleaded guilty to helping her daughter cover up the crime and hindering her apprehension. She will serve 8 years behind bars. Both women will serve their time in the same prison.
The 24-year-old woman who fled the scene after causing a crash that killed five people on Easter 2009 will be pushing 60 when she gets out of prison.
During a tearful hearing Friday where many invoked God to explain the tragedy, Aimee Michael was given a 50-year sentence. A judge ordered her to to serve 36 years in prison with the rest on probation.
In a rare show of emotion, Judge Kimberly M. Esmond Adams, her voice wavering and her eyes filling with tears, said she believed that the children became angels at the moment of death. A former prosecutor, she said this case was the hardest she’d ever dealt with.
I wonder if they shed any tears for the lives that were lost — not just theirs.

I have no sympathy for Aimee or her mother. What they did was selfish, inhumane and calculated. They didn’t cry for the victims’ lives Aimee ended, so Aimee shouldn’t be shedding tears now.
I think the sentence is too light. Old girl should be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

I think it’s the glasses for the daughter and the all around ugliness of the mother that gives that appearance to them.

I think she was scared but she should have stayed on the scene and her mother shouldn’t have tried to cover it up but I don’t believe she did this purposely. That girl has 5 bodies on her conscious for life and that is alot to deal with alone unless she’s evil. I’ve seen people purposely murder someone and get less time than that. Only in the South!

I read on the ajc ( I know, I know) that the mom got 8 and will have to do 5 with 3 on probation… all around it’s a very sad situation. If you think about it, she will probably end up in there the rest of her life. 36 years is a long time, even at her age, 24, she’ll be 60 years old when she gets out. I blame her for leaving the scene, but I hold her mother accountable too! Where were their morals? After watching the news they both knew what happened, and I honestly think if they could have gotten away with it, to this day it would be unknown who cause the accident.
It’s like they threw a rock and because no one saw them actually do it, they weren’t going to admit to it. God forgives and we should too, but they had NO intention of coming forward on their own, 10 days they hid, and then took it a step further and tried to repair the damage… Knowing this I’m not in between. I’ll just pray for all involved.

I knew there was something to her leaving the scene!!!! She was probably high. That would not have looked good. People talking about she left because her emotions got the best of her!! Hell no! People run because they DON’T WANT TO GET CAUGHT!
I remember this story AND the followup story about the cover up so it’s hard for me to have any sympathy for her because she seemed to have no sympathy for the victims. I mean who can hear that they’ve killed multiple people…CHILDREN and just bounce and go with your life until you get caught…who does that?

One of my co-workers house burnt down. His wife was cooking and the gas stove exploded, she’s in a drug induced coma, 26% of his body is burnt up, so he’s in the hospital as well. Amazingly though, he was able to get the children out safely. I’ve been worried sick about him and his wife though. They are collecting money here for donations. They lost everything!! Sadly though, I think it will be a miracle if his wife makes it!

Countless people are sentenced to life in prision and DEATH for killing one person too. It goes both ways.
She didn’t even get 10yrs per victim AND she had other charges on top of that. I think she got a break personally

Hey E! I get what your saying but I can’t honestly believe this was done purposely. Yes she was DEAD WRONG for leaving the scene and her mother was even more wrong for trying to cover this up. I just think she was scared and acted out of fear. I’m not taking up for her by any means my heart goes out to the family of the 5 victims. I just think the sentence is way too harsh.

I agree. 1st degree murderers don’t do this much time. It was a horrific accident that she caused. 20 years would more than suffice.
Her mother has probably been sweeping her mess under a rug for years, and it has finally caught up to them both. @Choco, I believe in miracles as well. However I’ve seen a friend burnt up in a house fire before. They put them in a drug induced coma because it would be extremely too painful for them to be awake. She’s been in the coma since like 10/25

I believe this was an accident caused by a very scared young woman who made a very bad decision to drive off followed by a bad decision to cover it up. I hate to see her go to prison for that long. I hate to see her mom go also. But, I cannot imagine the pain the familes have suffered because of her bad decisions. Always stay at the scence of an accident until the cops arrive. In Georgia it’s the law even if you are not the cause of the accident. It’s very tempting to run from something when we are afraid, but we have to think about other’s lives and if there is anything we can do to help those that are injured. Nobody wins in this situation. Everybody loses. Everybody. I hope the families can begin to put the pieces of their lives back together.

I think her faith was doomed when she fled, and even more so when she tried to cover it up.
I think she acted out of fear. I’d like to think I’d turn myself if i did something wrong. I can say that easily cuz I’ve never done anythign wrong. Never been in a situation like remotely close to that. But I also don’t wanna go to Jail either. 5 bodies on your hands…thats heavy to carry in jail or outside of jail.
O.K. so if u r driving over the speedlimit to get to the babysitter before it closes or get to work on time. maybe driving 50mph in a 35. And you cause a crash thus killing people. That is also WRECKLESS driving cause of the amount of speed. the DA decides to make you an example. Less we forget, this could have been anyone of us driving wreckless for any good reason. bad judgement after the crash yes. so many people are condemning this young girl like they have never made mistakes. she does not deserve to spend 36 years in prison.

The time she got was pretty justified imo. A guy in my area just got about the same time for a very similar accident. She was charged w/ driving reckless as well as vehicular homicide and a few other things. Considering all of that I say she got what she deserved, no crooked system here.

The jury and judge spoke on this situation. That’s why we have a judicial system. Life ain’t fair. But neither is her killing 5 people. At least she still has a life. I have so many mixed feelings about this situation. I was stuck in the traffic the day of this accident. By the time I was able to pass the scene, the burned car was still there. I later found out what happened. I know mistakes happen and we can all have bad judgement calls, but it still bothers me that not only did she leave the scene, she tried to cover up the whole incident (along with her mother). I don’t know what’s a good sentence for this situation and I wouldn’t want to make that call, but 5 people were killed as a result of her “simsatke” and subsequent actions.

Read some not all the comments and she is not getting 36 years on account of the ‘accident’ which yes could’ve happened to any of us who drive. She got 5 counts of vehicular homicide, 1 count of attempted, 1 count of tampering with evidence and some other charges as well. Her downfall was what happened after the accident because I honestly believe that had she waited and acted responsibly she would have been given a much shorter sentence and likely been given probation. Its a horrible thing that’s happening to her but it could have been prevented

36 years is a lot…but It’s 36 years of ‘LIVING” ……she will leave there with life still ahead of her. She showed no emotion during the trial….never apologized to the surviving victims before today’s statement and turned down a plea deal from the Public Defender’s office that would have given her the same sentence as her mother.
The mother was wrong…but we can at least empathize with the fact she also went into protect my child mode. Neither one of them had a record before this, and we know that this child didn’t set out to intentionally cause the tragedies. Perhaps it will be a good faith gesture on the side of the courts to allow them to go to the same facility.

What she did was selfish but I think the 36 years are just. Yes, there were 5 people that died but she didn’t intend to kill them. It wasn’t like that she said they are in my way so I will just kill them. She drove just like how majority of people drive in Atlanta every single day. Most likely she was trying to get where ever she had to go and thought that the world belonged to her, again like many other people in the city and probably on this board.
What made it ugly is that she fled the scene and tried to getaway with it. They found a blunt in the car and most likely she ran home to mama and mama told her what to do instead of telling her to turn herself in. Selfish people do sh!t like that, they are more concerned what will happen to them than to other people. There a millions around here. If she wouldn’t have fled and stayed at the scene. She may have only received traffic violations, involuntary vehicular homocide or something around that nature and maybe do 2 or something years at the most with lots of probation and community service. Especially that she is not a criminal.
Saying all of this, I think that justice was served, she gets out in 36 years she will be damn near 60 years old, she won’t have kids, husband, majority of her life is lost and I think that is a hard pill to swallow, knowing that you that you didn’t get live but you are still alive, so basically you may feel like you have no purpose.

I think she was in shock/denial and more than likely was advised by her legal counsel not to apologize until today (not saying that it was right). People proccess things differently right wrong or indifferent.

For those that actually went to the source and read the entire article I have to believe that the judge and I are pure clones of one another. She said everything that I said a day or so ago. She, like myself, was most disgusted with the mother b/c like she said the mother failed her child.
Judge Adams said she scoured the recesses of her soul to picture a scenario where she would abandon what’s right just to protect her own child. Need I testify in here??? I said the exact same thing. What’s wrong is WRONG no matter who it is and be it my mama, daddy or brother I wouldn’t be an accomplice for ANYONE.
And like the judge and I both seem to feel. What kind of mother could repeatedly watch news report after news report about these dead people and know they’re looking for your child and you do nothing?!?!?!?
I would have thrown the book at the mother just as she did and I believe that Aimees sentence was dead on too.
This should be a lesson to all of us that we need to do better in all aspects of our lives. Like the judge said fatal accidents happen all of the time but what you do after the accident is what counts. This is such a sad case for everyone involved.
