Coach Sued for Whipping Basketball Players With Belt

A high school coach is in hot water for whipping his basketball players with a belt for misbehavior.

A video aired by WLBT News in Jackson, MS, shows Murrah high school coach Marlon Dorsey whipping a boy as the player passively bends over to accept his punishment.

Attorney Lisa Ross calls the whippings appalling. “Teachers do not have a right to hit you,” she said in an interview with WLBT.

Dorsey and the parents of the boys met recently to discuss the beatings. Coach Dorsey later gave them a written apology. “He can’t even give me a good reason for putting his hands on my kid ’cause I don’t do it” said one outraged dad.

The boys say they didn’t report the whippings — which have been going on since September — because they feared being kicked off the basketball team.

Coach Dorsey was suspended for 28 days without pay.

Paddling students was a routine and necessary means to establish order in high schools in the 80s. Back in those days, we didn’t have guns in school, high pregnancy rates or the gang violence that plague schools today.

Still, it does seem odd that a coach is whipping boys on a basketball court Joe Jackson style.

Matt Lauer Responds To Kanye West’s Twitter Rant

Matt Lauer responded to Kanye West’s Twitter rant after his interview on The Today Show yesterday where he discussed the incident in which he said “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

Kanye accused Lauer of trying to force answers out of him during the tense interview.

Kanye gets kudos for not backing down from his stance on what he (and many others) perceived as the government’s racist response to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. “I think a lot of things that happen in America, period, are because of race.” said Kanye.

Kanye objected to Lauer playing a tape of Bush condemning Kanye’s remarks to get a response from him: “I didn’t need you guys to show me the tape… to prompt my emotions.”

He struggled with Lauer’s leading attempts to get him to say he was sorry for calling Bush a racist. “I did not have enough information in that situation to call him a racist.”

Later, Kanye lashed out angrily when Lauer played the MTV VMA clip of him snatching Taylor Swift’s mic.

“Yo, how am I supposed to talk if you’re gonna run this thing in the middle while I’m talking,” he said as the MTV clip played. Lauer explained to Kanye that the audio was “under” him, meaning low.

“But I’m hearing it while I’m trying to talk. Please don’t let that happen again!,” Kanye snapped to the producers off camera.

Afterward, Lauer explained that running video while a guest is talking is “something we do every day.” He even plugged Kanye’s upcoming live performance on The Today Show on Friday, November 26.

Amber Rose Plans To Tell All Kanye’s Dirt in New Reality Show

I know you don’t care about this chick, but somebody somewhere does. Kanye West’s ex-girlfriend, Amber Rose was spotted talking up a storm on her cell phone in Hollywood, CA today. Amber, who currently makes her home in Miami, is self-producing her own reality show where she plans to shed light on her relationship with controversial rapper Kanye West. “Self-producing” means Rose hasn’t found a network willing to cut a check to hire real producers. Which means we may never get a chance to see this show unless she uploads the episodes to YouTube.

Can you blame the networks? What could she possibly tell us about Kanye that we don’t already know? Amber is a lesbian and former stripper who famously provided beard services to Kanye. We know that already.

Kanye, who is slowly cracking up, will most likely beat her to the punch and reveal his own secrets on his Twitter page. I guess the only remaining question is: who is paying Amber Rose’s bills? Does anyone recognize the dude leaning on the Beamer? That’s not Reggie Bush is it?

Aimee Michael, Mother Sent To Separate Prisons

The Georgia Department of Corrections will not house the woman convicted of causing the deadly Easter crash and her mother who was convicted of covering up the crime in the same prison.

Officials with the Fulton County Jail told Channel 2’s Tom Regan that Aimee Michael, 24, and her mother, Sheila Michael, will each serve their sentences in separate state prisons.

Michael, who was sentenced to serve 36 years in prison, was transferred to the Metro State Woman’s prison on Constitution Rd in Southeast Atlanta.

Sheila Michael, 53, who was ordered to serve eight years in prison, is now at Lee Arrendale State Prison north of Gainesville. Her husband, Aimee’s father, will have to drive 5 hours from Atlanta to visit his wife.

Last week Michael was found guilty of five counts of vehicular homicide, one count of failure to maintain lane and one count of serious injury by vehicle, hit and run.

Police say Michael was on an ice cream run on April 12, 2009 when she caused a horrific accident that killed 5 people, including 3 children, and injured a woman on Camp Creek Parkway.

Michael fled the scene of the accident but she was arrested 10 days later.

Why Won’t They Let Cam Newton Be Great?

My post title is a borrowed phrase from fellow celebrity blogger Fresh who oft questions the media and bloggers’ enthusiasm when one of our stars stumbles and falls before they can achieve greatness.

In this case, it’s Auburn quarterback Cameron “Cam” Newton who is from College Park, Georgia. He is being scrutinized by the media (and investigated by the NCAA) for walking around with fat pockets when he should be flat broke.

Doesn’t Cam know he’s supposed to be happy making minimum wage as a chalkboard washer as part of his school’s work-study program? These charges are so egregious (taking money to play while he’s in college) that even the FBI is investigating!

All of these accusations and investigations could jeopardize his eligibility as a player — and his claim for the Heisman trophy. Yes we’ve seen it all before. Just 2 months ago, former USC great Reggie Bush gave back his Heisman trophy after scandalous rumors surfaced that he lined his pockets with USC boosters’ cash.

While Reggie Bush’s fall from grace is still fresh in the sportswriters’ minds, they have turned their attentions to Cam Newton, 21, the leading candidate for the Heisman trophy.

How dare he violate the NCAA’s old, antiquated rules that prohibit accepting cash to play college ball, they ask.

Blame it all on FoxSports.com for initially reporting that Newton was accused of cheating on exams as well as being charged with three felony counts – one of which involved a stolen lap-top. [link].

Then there’s that mess about Cam’s father Cecil calling Mississippi State to inform them that it would take “more than a scholarship” for his son to play there. Cam later regretted his father’s decision to choose Auburn for him because “the money was better.”

Who’s to say that a former MSU player was being truthful when he said Cam was offered $180,000 in cash to play at Auburn? MSU’s head coach Dan Mullen hasn’t denied the allegations, but that could just be sour grapes because his star quarterback went elsewhere.

Cam Newton still has 3 games to play for Auburn (his team can clinch the SEC West by beating the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday).

The question is, will the Heisman voters allow the rampant rumors and speculation to interfere with their decision to vote for Newton? Especially since nothing has been proven by the FBI or the NCAA?

One thing we do know is that Reggie Bush has forever muddied up the playing field for any black college player to be considered for the Heisman trophy. The sad part is Reggie doesn’t even think he’s black.
