NFL Player Jovan Belcher Kills Girlfriend

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher, 25, reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend during an argument in the early morning hours on Saturday. He then drove to the nearby Arrowhead team practice facility where he turned the gun on himself in front of his shocked coach and general manager.

Police say Belcher shot and killed Kasandra Perkins, the mother of his infant daughter, early Saturday.

Authorities did not release a motive for the murder-suicide, though there are reports that Belcher and Perkins argued after she returned home from attending a Trey Songz concert.

Fans and players were shocked and saddened by the news, but the game between the Chiefs and the Carolina Panthers will be played as scheduled on Sunday.

Police received a call from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a home near the team’s practice facility.

Upon arrival, police were informed that Perkins was shot by her boyfriend, Belcher, a Kansas City Chiefs player. At about that time, police received a call the Chiefs’ practice facility about a man with a gun.

“The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with,” police spokesman Darin Snapp said. The player was “holding a gun to his head,” Snapp said.

At the practice facility, Belcher, was approached by General Manager Scott Pioli and Coach Romeo Crennel.

“They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they’d done for him,” Snapp said. “They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That’s when he walked away and shot himself.”

Belcher and Perkins were parents to 2-month-old Zoey Michelle, according to sports blogger Stiletto Jill.

Belcher is a graduate of Maine College. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009 for a reported $1.9 million.

Belcher was obviously in serious pain, so much so that he decided to take his own life. But how selfish and cowardly for him to kill his girlfriend leaving their 2-month old child parentless. :(

@ spiceykay: ESPN might have gotten that wrong. The police said it was her mother who called. I’ll wait for clarification.

This is so tragic. I feel so sorry for that baby. Poor child has to grow up with no parents and knowing one killed the other. And no one will ever know what he was thinkimg or what led to his decision. So tragic.

Other sources are saying it was his mother who was in town for the holidays. She should have told police my son shot the mother of his child.

Sad situation all the way around. I’m sure the argument could’ve been resolved without violence. This is why we as a people must learn to CONTROL our emotions rather than feeling a need to react in anger. RIP to her and prayers for those who witnessed both shootings, the baby who is alone, and others affected.

I’m sure a little something more serious was going on then the Trey Songz concert….it was something about THAT night and THAT argument that made him snap! These young ladies are so excited about having babies/relationships with these athletes that they don’t take the time to know who they are REALLY dealing with…..IDK if this is about mental illness or about a man being MAD because his girlfriend/baby mama went to a concert without him……again

Prayers going up for both families and that precious daughter….this was senseless!!!…smh

Lord Father Papa God please put a hand and guide this generation lord. We are lost. No one, not even animals deserves to die like this. Why are people so quick to anger and violence? No one seems to know how to walk away from situations anymore. Please bless their daughter and cover her in your blood Lord that she may still be brought up in love. The love that her parents are no longer here to lavish her with. Amen.

This is sad and heartbreaking, but happens more often then we think. We will never know what his reason/cause was. I do hope that the issue of suicide is highlighted; so many kids are growing up as a survivor of a parent who felt unable to live on. There is support and resources if you are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, hurt, etc. or if you just want someone to listen, please try 1-800-273-TALK.
