Jovan Belcher’s Mother Signs Away Guardianship of His Daughter

Jovan Belcher and Kasandra Perkins

The mother of Jovan Belcher, the Kansas City Chiefs player who shot his girlfriend to death then killed himself, has signed over guardianship of Belcher’s infant daughter to his girlfriend’s cousin, the NY Post reports.

The NY Post reports exclusively that Sheyl Shepherd signed a notarized letter giving guardianship to Sophie Perkins, a cousin of the late Kasandra Perkins. The letter was signed by Perkins, Shepherd, a witness and a notary, according to the Post.

Shepherd stood to benefit from nearly $3 million in life insurance and NFL benefits inherited by little Zoey Perkins. But legal experts say she has hurt her chances.

Shepherd wrote and signed the letter on Dec. 3 — two days after the murder-suicide — giving Perkins’ cousin “temporary guardianship” allowing Zoey to attend her mother’s Texas memorial service, the Post reports.

In the letter obtained by the Post, Shepherd wrote: “I, Cheryl Shepherd, who has custody of child Zoey Michelle Belcher . . . hereby grant temporary guardianship . . . to Sophie Deon Perkins” — Kasandra’s cousin, states the letter obtained by The Post.

The letter also included the following text:

“This temporary guardianship will be allowed until the requested paperwork for joint custody between Cheryl Shepherd and Sophie Deon Perkins has been determined through the court system.”

Belcher’s family had challenged Belcher’s paternity, saying it wasn’t clear if he was the baby’s father.

Police interviews conducted with Shepherd reveal that Belcher argued with his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, about their daughter’s paternity before shooting her multiple times then turning the gun on himself in December.

“Ms. Shepherd seems to think she is the legal custodian of Zoey,” the letter shows otherwise, said Perkins family attorney Jon Michael Franks at a Fort Worth court hearing on Thursday.

Belcher’s family told the Post that Shepherd signed the agreement because she didn’t think she could win custody of Zoey.

“She feels like the mom’s side always wins with this type of issue or situation,” said a Long Island cousin of Belcher.

Umm this makes no sense at all. So who has custody….Kassandra’s cousin or Belcher’s cousin?

No she postponed splitting $3 million til the courts work out the paperwork :coffee: Sounds like they will have joint custody. She didn’t sign over custody because it was best for the child, she did it because she thought she didnt have a chance at winning.

The shadiness makes me happy she doesn’t have custody.

Kim Kardashian Says She Plans To Keep Her Baby Private

Is the most shameless media magnet in the industry scaling back on her attention-slorin’ already?

Well, it believe it or not, it sounds that way. Newly announced mommy-to-be Kim K recently stopped by MTV and revealed that the moment where she found out she was toting a gut full of Yeezy will not be shown on the upcoming season of Kourtney and Kim take Miami.

      via MTV News

It doesn’t seem like we will get to see first-hand how Kim will adjust to motherhood, since she revealed that she plans to keep both the birth and her baby “private.” But Kardashian fans, don’t be disappointed yet, Kim said there will be some baby talk on this season of “Kourntey & Kim Take Miami,” which premieres Sunday on E!

“[You won’t see] the moment where I find out that I’m pregnant. We weren’t filming at that point,” Kim said. “And I tell Kourntey, so you’ll see enough, just maybe right at the end when we’re leaving Miami, and that’s kind of when I find out, but you won’t see the moment where I find out.”

      – 3 albums

Something like that happened to Ne-yo. He wasn’t the father of a child he thought was his and b/c he signed dem papahs they STILL made him pay that triflin broad and then she disappeared out of his life.

I remember when that situation was going on and the story then was that Ne-Yo knew that child was not his, but he wanted to claim it and that was why he signed the birth certificate. She got all that money because he broke his promise to provide for the child as if it were his.
      __________________________

…and see I remember it being the TOTAL OPPOSITE. He signed the certificate and they took a test (for whatever reason) and she called him crying saying “he’s not yours”….but law in State of California says that if you signed the birth certificate you are still the fahva. So they settled out of court for a LOOOOOTTT of money and she bounced and as @Ty just say, he was attached to the baby.

@ Prynn thats what I thought too  Either way she bounced with the baby after she got paid knowing he wanted to be in the child’s life :coffee:

This is such a sad situation. I honestly think Belcher’s mom was just siding with her son as far as the paternity issue. I know a couple mama’s boys who’s mom would take up for them even when they are in the COMPLETE wrong! But that was shady ass hell to insinuate it was the girlfriends fault for him carrying out this act. So why did she give up temporary guardianship? Was she tricked by the family or did she honestly think she stood no chance of winning custody? None of this really makes sense :(

Bird says: NOTHING good and NOTHING bad about her son who had just murdered someone with her and his child in earshot.

      **********************

i’m not trying to convince you but what do you want her to add? he was drunk but we already knew he shot and killed the girl. they asked her why did he do it? she’s not going to say because he loved her and appreciated her. she was trying to convey the bad thoughts that were in HIS mind before and during this thing. these were things HE said about the girl, whether true or shady. and the media took that and ran with it. she called the girl her daughter in the heat of the moment. if she had any animosity about that girl, she wouldn’t have been begging her to try to stay alive.

now if the girl told her to stay out her bizness, what do you want her to do? you know girlfriend and wives don’t respond well to mothers all up in their business. even so, she was THERE helping out.

i’m just trying to give a different perspective.

Well his mother still has the upper hand, the cousin can fight for custody all she likes, but she would be like 3rd in line, if the girls parents are not in a position to take care of the child then his mother would be next, this is all a formality they have to go through the court, her family better muster up a sibling a cousin will have a hard time winning custody over a fit grandparent.

WHY are people asking where her parents were??? She moved to be with the man she loved were her parents supposed to move too? I don’t think this makes them unfit or bad parents she was of age. My mama would have had my baby ASAP as soon as it all went down. I am not sure why its her cousin but I do feel his mother should still be allowed to see Zoey but custody needs to go to the parents or cousin if they are fit and want her. Such a sad situation and I’m not sure how much of the money anybody will be able to control I am guessing it’s in trust for Zoey and they may get a regular child support check but I don’t see them having access to ball out.
