Jonesboro murders

Police are investigating the shooting deaths of 2 children during an early morning home invasion in Jonesboro, GA.

Sister and brother Tatiyana Coates, 11, and 15-year-old Daveon Coates were killed by robbers who forced their way into the Clayton County home early Saturday morning.

At least 3 other children — ages 6 to 13 — were inside the house when the burglars began shooting. They were unharmed. One of the children called 911.

Neighbors also called 911 to report hearing gunfire at 5 a.m. The children were home alone when the deadly home invasion occurred. Their parents were out “socializing” at another location, according to investigators.

Police are investigating to determine is anything was taken during the home invasion.

Police say 2 families lived in the house on Libby Lane in the Marlborough subdivision.

Authorities believe the house was targeted by individuals known to the family.

A neighbor, Joy Shilengay, said the 2 families moved into the house about a month ago. Prior to that, she said, the house sat vacant for two years.

Shilengay told WSB-TV she often saw the children playing outside, and that their parents were generally friendly.

The violence shattered the normally tranquil neighborhood just south of Atlanta.

“I’ve been living here for three years and nothing like this has ever happened,” Shilengay told 11Alive’s Erin Calandra. “But in this day and age, anything is possible. People don’t care.”

How odd that the brother & sister were killed while the other children were unharmed. I hope it wasn’t a case of a parent not wanting to pay child support.

IKR? All of those children home alone at that hour & the parents were out “socializing” partying. So sad & senseless. RIH young ones.

…and it is reported by Sandra, that *two* families lived in the home. So, more than 1 adult and neither stayed home with the kids. Oh, I guess the 15 years old was the parent. But I know parents need a break sometimes…

So tragic. Something seems odd. Why would those two be the ones killed. To kill a kid is sick.

I’m so sick of irresponsible adults leaving children unsupervised. Now look what happened. I bet this invasion has to do with drugs. These poor children didn’t deserve what they got. The adults have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

  • http://thedevereauxshow.com/ Ms.Devereaux

They died most likely for something them adults were involved in.

“Authorities believe the house was targeted by individuals known to the family.”

Ironically, the article this post is linked to states authorities believe the family WASN’T targeted.

Disgusting and heartbreaking I don’t even want to read it ???

  • Realtalk

Rest in peace beautiful Black babies.

  • free

probably killed because they were witnesses or fought for the other kids. i read somewhere that the family had only been in the house for a month so it could be that the invaders had the wrong group of people. regardless of where the parents were, the only ones to blame are the no good n!ggas that ran up in there and killed KIDS. chances are, the parents would have been killed too.

  • TeeTee

    I agree

Sandra, this goes to show you that this whole mixed income theory by Mayor Campbell was the worst thing for middle to upper middle class families in Atlanta. Grady Homes was tore down as it should have been. The area was redevelop beautifully and middle class America move in and you mixed them with former Gardy Homes residents. And what you have is the former residents using drugs and their grand babies selling drugs all smack in the middle of middle-class America.

Life insurance for children max out at 25k hopefully this ain’t the angle.

  • Doink_Ahanahue

RIGHT!? Plus some school age children and families start waking up around that time! I believe there is (sadly) much more information to be exposed about this.

Plus, who with that many children of those ages is THAT irresponsible! Good example for that 15 y/o who would have wanted to start going to parties like that…

    DO
    BETTER
    PEOPLE!!!

  • T3

I’m thinking they were awake or woke up from them coming in and were killed because they saw and would be able to identify the killer(s). Super sad whatever the case.

  • Low E. TUH!

Authorities believe the house was targeted by individuals known to the family.

VERY LIKELY…ONLY BEEN THERE A MONTH? SOMEBODY IN ONE OF THESE FAMILIES IS HATEFUL AF.

  • Low E. TUH!

IF GRADY HOMES WAS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE THEN YOU’RE SPEAKING OF GENTRIFICATION…IT WAS NEVER MIDDLE-CLASS AMERICA TO BEGIN WITH. YOU CAN’T CHANGE THE NEIGHBORHOOD WITHOUT EVOLVING THE PEOPLE WITHIN…

  • QuietStorm

    So Jesus ordered the hit?

  • QuietStorm

Black people stop killing your children. We barely have a future, let’s stop damaging what little we do have.

  • QuietStorm

    You already know…

  • http://yeuphonic.com @yeuphonic

    True!!! From the links:
“At this time, no, we don’t have any reason to believe they were targeted,” a police official said.

“At this time, the exact circumstances that led to the two young teens’ deaths are still under investigation, and investigators still don’t have a motive. Tatiyana and Daveon’s parents are cooperating with investigators to help police with the case.”

  • Look@m3

That’s what they call it over there unfortunately they still offered section 8 housing which allowed the same type of people who were originally there to live in the “gentrified” area. I know ass backwards thanks to my wasted vote to Kareem Reed.

  • Low E. TUH!

BECAUSE SECTION 8 HAS TO BE OFFERED IN MOSTLY ALL AREAS REGARDLESS OF COST…THAT SAME “GENTRIFIED” AREA WAS/IS HOME TO THOSE TYPES OF PEOPLE AND THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE NICE THINGS, BUT SHOULD ALSO BE TAUGHT HOW TO MAINTAIN NICE THINGS. SOME PEOPLE JUST DON’T KNOW.
