LL Cool J unveiled his new clothing line “Todd Smith” at Macy’s in Culver City, California on Saturday. You would assume that a man Todd’s age would include more sophisticated pieces like tailored shirts and dinner jackets in his collection. Instead we see the same ole same ole.
Do we really need a 40-year-old thug designing clothing for other 40-year-old thugs who refuse to grow up? (Source)
Whatever happen to getting old and retiring? Laying back and enjoying life. It’s stuff like this that makes me thing these people in the industry don’t have no money like people think they do.
He’s not old! People are living longer and 40 is no where near old.
And who’s to say that his target audience isn’t the 18-34 yr old demographic. They are the ones that buy this stuff, so I’m sure that’s who he’s probably targeting. I say make that money and keep riding the train till the wheels fall off. At least he hasn’t put out another album!
talk about oversaturation..get in where he can but he’d be better at doing more movies
Im so sick of everybody trying to have a clothing line. Is this the only investment idea these black entertainers can think of? His clothes look just like everybody elses. Im sure its also WAY over priced since Im sure it was made in Taiwan by some 6 year old children in a sweatshop. It will be at TJ Maxx really soon just like all the others, dont waste your money buying it at Macys (in case you were going to buy it).
ya’ll leave LL alone. if he want to try his hand at a clothing line, then let him. i’m sure if it flops he won’t be hurting…all that money he got. he has been in the game since the 80’s…..black folks always trying to tear each other down. what happened to trying to support one another? you don’t have to buy it if you don’t like it, but that don’t mean that somebody else won’t like it. you wouldn’t catch me in a pair of apple bottoms, but i’m sure it’s some of you that have a few pair. to each it’s own…
LL is not nor has he ever been a thug. Take your eyes away from the bedazzled shirts for a minute and notice none of the pants in that pic are sagging. At least that’s a good thing. Still, I’m beginning to wonder if these celebs and their handlers are retarded. Everyone has started a clothing line or put their name on a perfume brand. Why!?!?! Diddy is the only person who has had any longevity in that area. Kimora is getting up there, but that is the only other person who has gotten more than 3 or 4 years out of the clothing line thing and the vast majority of them never take off at all like Bow Wow and even G-Unit. Make your people work for their money. Tell them to come up with an innovative idea for your brand. Or better yet, how about you just stay in your lane and try to improve in that area?
I guess…I hope he had investors because this is a waste of money and time!!!
I will agree with the designs & everything looking the same it seems everyone is going for the Ed Hardy look now!! I think LL or Todd since he on his grown man (lol) I hope it does well cause I like LL & plus Im not sure what he’s doing as far as his rap career now so I guess this i something for him to fall back on??
Like Kat said to each it’s own!!!
LL is not a thug anymore. But anyway i agree it is the same ol same ol BUT hey he is doing what sells. I do think that he could do both. It would be nice to see him do hip hop gear and nice suits or button downs ya know? Oh well…it’s his money and his company so whatever.
If I’m not mistaken, LL has another clothing line that focuses on suiting and other men’s formal wear, or it may be the same line and he has now decided to add casual collection to it. There’s nothing wrong with diversity. LL likes to dress casual for the most part but he does switch up with formal wear often, shouldn’t his brand reflect who he is?
LL is still hot…40 or not! and I’m luvin the clothes line.
LOL… @ Sandra.
I agree with Sandra. I am sick of these celebrities and their overpriced clothing line. Can they think of anything else to invest in? I mean this is getting ridiculous. Leave the designing to the real designers. I am not trying to hate either. I’m just sayin…
But there is no such thing as age appropriate for woman right? So why can’t the same be saide for men? It’s time out for all this double standard crap. ;O(
Well, everybody needs clothes so that’s target #1.I don’t know who it’s going to target whom-older people, young people who knows.
I would buy some pieces (of a female) line it was affordable and look nice like Eve new line is boo-boo, HOD is boo boo, Baby Phat is boo boo.I rather stick to Wet Seal and Shop Bop clothes that look decent and not just made just because they some superstar.
ANother one…. LL if you really wanted set yourself apart then it should be affordable and sold at Target. At least Target is the upscale Wal-Mart.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM?SOME PEOPLE WILL BUY LL COOLJ CLOTHES. I WOULDNT BUT I WOULD GET HIS HATS IF HE DESIGN IT.
do your thing LL!

Who he is is a 40-year-old man who needs to stop trying to dress like his son’s friends. It’s embarrassing when you can’t tell the difference between a grown man and a teenager.
Even if his target audience is the 18-34 year old male, I don’t see any one in that demographic jumping to wear LL Cool J’s clothes. Time to sit down.
LL is and always will be hot. Oh, what I would do just to be a tube of carmex in his hand.
He should give up on the clothes and start his own chapstick line.
sandra, i’m w/you. nothing new here…. i’m also tired of seeing grown *ss men walking the street in football and basketball jerseys.

Who says that grown men can’t wear hoodies and jeans? You don’t see 40 year old women in a business suit 24/7, so why should a man? I personally love seeing older people display their youthful style sense. LL’s choice of dress would not be age appropriate if his undies were showing or if he had on a baseball cap perched on top of his head ever so lightly – which he does not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with what that man has on. As soneone else pointed out, his jeans are not super baggy. I love the way he’s wering them because they aren’t super fitted and tacky looking nor are they baggy and sloppy looking. The hang just right.
Just because one turns a certain age doesn’t mean that their WHOLE style has to change. It just means that you have to tone down certain things, which in my opinion he has. He doesn’t dress like 20 year old LL…
Keep in mind he has sons, so it isn’t totally farfetched for him to target that age group…Also, this clothing line is NOT new…it has been around for a MINUTE and showcased a men’s suit portion of the line like 2 years ago on Rip The Runway, so get some current news, Sandra!!!
…better than another liquor line.
Go, LL!
I agree with Sandra, everyone has a clothing line out now and its crazy just trying to keep up!
I feel that the older men should set an example for the younger brother’s coming up behind them. It’s ok to wear the bedazzled (as per Bird) *I like that word by the way* sweaters or hoodies as they are called, or the bedazzled t-shirt and jeans, but that look is getting so tired to me.
Men can dress casual and not always be in a pair of jeans and the ever loving graphic styled sweaters and t-shirts! What happened to slacks and polo shirts, or the buttoned down shirt! What about shorts and some nice leather styled sandals, this image that we black folks adhere to is insane, and would be completely funny if it wasn’t so sad!
To me it’s the same old tired look, just a different designer/celebrity. I say (and this is not me hating) try something different for a change.
But like many of you stated to each its own!
I LOVE LL AND THUG IS A LITTLE HARSH NOW…IM LIKING THE CLOTHING LINEPLUS HE ALREADY WENT THE SUIT AND TIE ROUTE…MAYBE HE JUST EXPANDING ON THE ONE HE ALREADY HAS!
I definitely don’t see a thug…The only thugs that i see are the ones that you promote on this site…Jeezy, Rocko and other losers
Make that money LL shoot I wish I had a clothing line.

LMAO
I thought he was the spokesman for chapstick?
Dropping a clothing line is all fine and dandy but one of the other writers over at Highbrid Nation brought up a good point. This is not the first time he has debuted this line of clothes. The Todd Smith line first debuted in 2006. It’s not new though he’s trying to act like it is. Guess no one cared the first time around.
I have to agree with Sandra. I think people are looking for clothing that’s distinct from others. I know I am tired of seeing the majority of black men wearing the same clothes. What’s appealing is something different and LL’s line just is not it.
