Today I received an email from the one and only Trina Broussard, who possesses one of the most beautiful voices in all of music. Trina said, “Girl, u are CRAZY!!!! Please go easy on some of these people!!! LOL.”
It’s funny because Trina’s album (the one that was never released) is part of my emergency First Aid kit that I carry with me everywhere to bring myself back to life after taking an accidental overdose of this BS they call music on the radio these days.
The other albums in my emergency kit are, of course, Monica, Lauryn Hill (who I just got finished listening to), Chico DeBarge, Keyshia Cole, Brandy, Mariah (her old stuff), Ne-Yo, and others.
The problem with our music today is that our artists are serving too many masters. It sickens to hear our established artists talking about “crossing over”. If you make good music “they” will listen. It’s as simple as that.
Our urban artists are forsaking their built-in core audiences to appeal to the masses who don’t even care about them. Instead of making music to cross over us – try appealing to the ones who brought you to the dance in the first place.
Thanks to Trina Broussard for reaching out. I’ll be checking for your new music to add to my emergency kit!
