While perusing the Black Voices forums I ran across this little tidbit of information about Barack Hussein Obama cutting federal funding to historically black colleges. I’m not surprised. This is the same president who killed the DC private school voucher program that mainly benefitted black students from DC’s poorest neighborhoods.
I can’t wait to see the excuses the Kool Aid drinkers give for this indefensible action by the Obama administration.
Leaders of historically black colleges say they’ll fight a reduction in a federal program they call a financial lifeline at a time of economic distress for the schools and their students.
President Barack Obama’s education budget, unveiled Thursday, included major spending increases in many areas — but didn’t include an extra $85 million that black institutions have received annually for the past two years thanks to a 2007 change to the student loan laws.
That two-year-old program provided direct funds to federally recognized HBCUs — historically black colleges and universities.
Other direct federal support to the schools would increase from $238 million to $250 million, but with the expiration of the HBCU fund the schools effectively would see a $73 million cut.A program supporting Native American tribal colleges would also see decreased funding, while one for institutions serving large numbers of Hispanic students would see an increase from $93 million to $98 million.
Education Department officials emphasized that all such institutions stand to gain from other parts of the budget, notably the proposed increase in the maximum Pell Grant for low-income students by $200 — to $5,550.
And your point is????

Mo B in da house! Closed and all!!!!!!!
before my computer had a breakdown…i was saying i need more people. on one hand these HBCU’s need more funding. but on the other….alot of them also need MAJA restructuring. cause it seems like there is always a HBCU in danger of closing and/or on the brink of loosing their accreditation due to GROSS mismgmt. of funds and poor leadership. which is sad. a dayum shame. we need “our” colleges. they are the lifeblood and history of the black community.
again i am gonna hafta go read the ENTIRE article cause we know sandra is notorious for leaving stuff out…lol.

EXCELLENT CONCENSUS!!!
I’d rather the money go to the STUDENTS in the form of more grant money…which has been cut over the last ten years…then go to the actual ‘schools’…which can mean that A LOT OF MONEY end up in HBCUs top administrators hairdressers pockets and TJMS Cruises, Golden Corral, nail shops, et al

sip ..!.. sip … koolaide
while i watch the tea baggers gulp 2 fat ones
Sorry, Sandra, I have to go with the kool-aid kids on this one.
I wasn’t for the voucher program either.
hmmm when you source is black voices i tend to cringe…. so i went there to see and read the rest, because giving money to colleges and not to students has been a fight among presidents and student body. after reading the article, its a matter of restructuring and giving more money to the student. when they quoted richard burr, who wouldnt recognize a black college if he drove up to one and had lunch, was laugh out loud funny. nc central alum here… he just want the negro vote because hes about as popular as george bush and is in danger of loosing his job.
A large number of students leave HBCU’s owing them large amounts of money and with defaulted student loans. Those that do granduate rarely if ever give money to the colleges. Is it the Federal Government’s responsibility to keep these institutions afloat? I mean after all they are private schools. Seems to me Tom Joyner is the only one that really puts his money where his mouth is. Pass the koolaid.
well im all for the pell grant increase! now maybe they’ll give a sista a chance! not only that but obama is in the works of having unemployed persons to be able to continue or pursue a degree! IM DOWN and i’ll drink to that!!
SsssssssIP … as many know .. i lost my job in Feb .. had to apply for things i never thought I did … wellllll .. Along comes Pres. Obama and his controversial stimulus package .. and guess WHAT .. SINCE i’m UNDER employed I can NOW afford and qualify for funding to FINISH my Degree …

@Kwall say it aint so. I am sure I know some of your friends the school was still somewhat small back then. Now that we moved to D1 they have a ton of kids. Back in my day you knew just about everybody.
@Starr some HBCUs are public others are private
I have never seen a public HBCU, tell me one, dang I thought they were ALL private.

As a graduate of an HBCU, this better not be true.
Hello All. Virginia State University, 1978. When I first started this job 30+ yrs ago, my white boss commented to me that my education from a black college is equivalent to about one more yr of high school. (To this day, he denies saying this to me but why would I make this up?) I learned much of what I know on this job and not in college. (College taught me to be independent.) Hell, I shoulda learned something in 30 yrs. Peaceeeeeeeeeeeee.
Not all HBCU’S are private. Langston University is not. And Shannon, you are very right about defaulted loans and graduates not giving back.
I am all for education, but I am really against a ‘structured education system’…
*sigh*
