The Georgia Department of Corrections will not house the woman convicted of causing the deadly Easter crash and her mother who was convicted of covering up the crime in the same prison.
Officials with the Fulton County Jail told Channel 2’s Tom Regan that Aimee Michael, 24, and her mother, Sheila Michael, will each serve their sentences in separate state prisons.
Michael, who was sentenced to serve 36 years in prison, was transferred to the Metro State Woman’s prison on Constitution Rd in Southeast Atlanta.
Sheila Michael, 53, who was ordered to serve eight years in prison, is now at Lee Arrendale State Prison north of Gainesville. Her husband, Aimee’s father, will have to drive 5 hours from Atlanta to visit his wife.
Last week Michael was found guilty of five counts of vehicular homicide, one count of failure to maintain lane and one count of serious injury by vehicle, hit and run.
Police say Michael was on an ice cream run on April 12, 2009 when she caused a horrific accident that killed 5 people, including 3 children, and injured a woman on Camp Creek Parkway.
Michael fled the scene of the accident but she was arrested 10 days later.

Why is it that when people are on trial they take out contacts and whatnot and try to look as sheepish as possible. Are they hoping that the jury will go light on them?? Cause in this case that mess did not work.

It is the South and they are black females. I did not agree with anything they did but as a mother I kind of found comfort knowing they were going to be serving their time at the same prison.

This was a lose, lose situation from the beginning. If this young lady would have just stopped and rendered aid it would have made her look so much better. I can’t even wrap my mind around hitting someone and leaving especially in this type of situation. What was she thinking?

@Sandra Check out the story on Character Corner about a Lesbian whose face was smashed into a car window by a NJ cop.
They should’ve put them in the same prison, in the same cell. Can you imagine the everday tension of having to stare at those walls and then turning to see the person you tried to help that got you in there? I’m sure it would be ok in the beginning because you’d assume they would keep each other relatively safe, but it’d definitely hit her hard again when the mother gets released and the daughter still has 28 years to go.

I have called 911 on my child being unrulely in my home and missing curfew, you best belive many parents are not going to cover up a kids crime. I really do think that this mother did it so many times for her daughter that she finally got caught up in it.

I don’t think in this case there was a sentencing disparity. In August of 2010, Gwinett County courts (also metro ATL) sentenced a white guy, Cody Rhoden, to 40 years for a very similar offense. This guy was 22 or 24 (can’t remember which) and he was on the downtown connector and when trying to pass a car clipped a limo. The limo had a family that was returning home from vacation. Killed were the son, the daughter, and the daughter’s son (an infant), and the limo driver. The mother was injured but recovered fully. Her husband was left with a severe spinal injury and still can’t fully walk or talk. The accident happened in 2009, and that person also left the scene.

I agree that if it’s a white MAN, they will sentence him severely if he does something awful like drive drunk and hurt someone. They’ll send him to death row, no problem.
A white WOMAN, on the other hand… do they usually sentence them as severely as men? I know here in Canada, Karla Homolka who sexually assaulted and killed some teenage girls with her serial rapist boyfriend is already out of prison living her life. But then again, this country is crazy when it comes to justice!

Cody Rhoden was in Gwinnett County when that happened. I got stuck in the traffic of that horrible accident. I still get chills when I ride past that spot daily.
And I’ve used his case to explain why I feel Aimee’s sentence was appropriate too. He killed four people, was under the influence and got 40 years. Aimee got a better sentence than he did, and she killed five people and supposedly wasn’t under the influence.

I wouldn’t have covered for my daughter. We would have got in the car and went to the nearest police station. I would have let them know she caused the accident and she left the scene because she was afraid.
Accidents happen. If they would have handled it the right way I am sure the outcome would have been different.

I saw that movie about the Karl story and couldn’t believe it. Her and hubby were just plain crazy!! I couldn’t believe she participated in that, when many times she could have got out. It seems she wanted to be with him more than anything in life. She let him go away, sleep with other women, have sex with her underage sister. She was just as sick as he was, and I felt no sympathy for her!
