The Joe Paterno backlash continues: TMZ.com reports NIKE is changing the name on its Joe Paterno Child Care Center in the wake of news that the famed Penn State coach covered up allegations of child abuse against one of his coaches.

Nike President Mark Parker said in a statement, “With the findings released today, I have decided to change the name of our child care center at our World Headquarters.”

Former NFL great Warren Sapp added his voice to the protests, suggesting that the university remove the statue honoring Paterno from the campus.

An in-depth report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh found that Paterno and other top level university officials looked the other way when told Sandusky was molesting boys on the school campus.

Paterno’s family released a lengthy statement Wednesday defending Paterno, who died in January at age 85.

The statement included this excerpt: “We have said from the beginning that Joe Paterno did not know Jerry Sandusky was a child predator. He immediately and accurately reported the incident he was told about in 2001.”

Unfortunately, Paterno will be remembered for what he didn’t do after 2001.
