Atlanta police have released surveillance video of a man they believe shot a 85-year-old woman during a home invasion Friday.

The video shows a man prowling an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Campbellton Road in southwest Atlanta around 6:30 a.m. The gunman, wearing a white short sleeved shirt and tan slacks, is seen going from door to door until he gains entry into Evelyn Atwater’s apartment.

Police tell the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Atwater fought with her attacker who shot her once in the head before fleeing on foot.

“We thought it was just a beating, and when they got her here to Grady [Memorial Hospital], they did a CAT scan and said, ‘Your mother has a bullet in her head. She’s been shot. And we were just devastated,'” daughter Wendy Atwater Truitt told Channel 2.

“When I got off the bus around 4 o’clock, they said my mother had been shot and my heart just fell,” son Anthony Atwater told Channel 2. “I mean, this is the sweetest lady in the entire universe. Why would anybody want to hurt her?”

Evelyn Atwater is out of intensive care but remains in bad shape, her family told the AJC.

Son Stanley Atwater told Channel 2 that the shooter needs to be taken off the streets. Police are hoping someone recognizes the suspect in the surveillance video.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477.
