A few parents fell out in the theater this past weekend when a gay character “came out” in the new children’s film ParaNorman. One mom emailed me to get my readers thoughts on the movie industry introducing homosexuality into children’s films.

The movie’s producers hope to create a dialog about same sex relationships between parents and their small children after viewing ParaNorman. My opinion is that small children, 5-7 years old, have no clue what their parents are talking about when they attempt to explain 2 boys getting it on. It makes no sense to me why grown folks continue to force adult sexual situations onto small children.

Hey Auntie,

Let me start off by saying that I love love love your site. Keep it up girlfriend. Well I’m writing to you to see if you are interested in posting something about the openly gay character in the children’s movie ParaNorman that was released in theaters this past weekend. My husband and I took our two sons ages 7 and 12 to see it opening day. We were excited that there was a semi-scary movie for kids and thought it would be fun. Well, at the end of the movie a very muscular, yet dingy, male teenaged character was asked out on a date by a boy-crazed teenage girl. His response was that he and his boyfriend would love to go.

MY MOUTH IMMEDIATELY FELL OPEN. I was totally not expecting it, and apparently none of the other parents were expecting it either. When we finally realized that our ears were not deceiving us, we all just laughed. I guess once we got over the initial shock that he came out and said that he was gay, we realized that the joke was really funny.

I didn’t have a problem with this but apparently there are some parents who were upset about it, including one that I work with. I would love to see what your readers think about gay characters now showing up in children films. A few years back someone told me to look out for the very popular children book that introduces same sex parents. (Mommy and Mommy took Lil Bill to the park type stuff) What are your thoughts?

I took my kids to see Paranorman on Saturday, and that threw me for a loop also. I had no issue with it. It’s no different then seeing guys wearing lipstick, eyelashes, and booty shorts….I say to each his own. My kids didn’t even catch it…And one of them is 10

My 5yo would ask questions. Her bus driver had to pull me aside yesterday, along with a classmates mother to tell me to convince my daughter that her playmate is a boy not girl. The boy has braids down his back and my daughter said boys don’t have long hair like mine. So I could just imagine what she would say if she saw 2 mommies- where’s the Daddy?

tough one. but I dont think I’d put it in a kid’s film. Funny ur posting this SR. I was watching Modern Family last night and one of the scenes was about the gay couples daughter losing her fav stuffed animal. In explaining to her where the male bunny went, one of the dads said he went to be with his girlfriend. The 3 y/o kid said no he didn’t, he went to be with his boyfriend. I had a long pause after hearing her say that.

Shielding it as if it were bad is what usually leads to the bullying and gay bashing cause they do what they learn from peers as they get older. as long as there is no kissing or humping, which a kid shouldn’t see from a gay or straight couple, it’s no big deal. Well, the movie was rated PG not G. PG’s rating is basically that it may be some material not suitable for children. There could be some profanity, mature themes, violence or even nudity. The parent’s should have gone beyond the look of “it’s a cartoon” and done some research.

There is a gay agenda. Gays have been in the industry since it started. I believe they always flocked to The Arts. What i’m tired of, is hearing about people’s sexual preferences. Just act, sing, dance, throw a ball, catch a ball, run fast or whatever you do, without shouting out “I’M GAY”. The Alien with one eyeball in the Lilo and Stitch movie was gay. I stopped my kids from watching that show.

I’m so glad people back in the day knew how to keep their love lives private. I would have never been exposed to Freddie Jackson’s good music if he came out back then. My parents would have hurried up and turned the radio off everytime they heard his voice.

I think if he simply said “me and my boyfriend would love to go” that may go right over many kids’ heads (so hopefully no conversation on the topic would be necessary)…however, if he actually went to his parents and had a “coming out conversation,” that would cause most children to have questions and so I would want to know about that before taking childen to see the movie.

This movie came out on 8/17. It really might be regional like @Dancer asked. BUT there were alot of people going to see it when me and 17 yo went to see “Sparkle” last week.

It debuted at 2 or 3 I think.

I haven’t seen this movie advertised, but my kids will not be seeing it. They are only 2 and 8 months so they wouldn’t understand anyway. I think it is important to allow children to be innocent as long as possible and enjoy being children as long as possible. Why are we in a hurry to have children grow up and experience everything?

I’m with you, Fayla…let’s talk about the oversexualization of children — from Toddlers and Tiaras to sh*t written across the a$$ of sweatpants made for little girls. I think we as a society will have to get SO far gone (morally) before we finally stop acting like “anything and everything goes” is the norm. Wow! Totally inappropriate!! I am not a parent, but when/if I do decide to become one I prefer to be the person to introduce such topics to them and not a movie.

I remember my Mom telling me that when she was younger every television show had that 1 token black character. I guess this was to soften the blow to ‘others’ and let them see that we don’t bite and we’re quite cute if you get to know us. Well now, we have the token gay person on every show. Similarly, I assume it’s to soften the hearts and minds of those that think Gay men/women are out (no pun intended) to take over the world.

I think that’s where the disconnect is in this conversation here today. When saying “protect a child’s innocence,” I don’t mean they should not know gay people exist, but sex (straight or gay) should not be force fed to little children. I also don’t think children should be exposed to all types of grown folks’ conversations — this bill is due; that person is having an affair — children are very smart and if they’re exposed to too much adult information, they tend to worry about things when they should only be worried about playing and learning and the like.
