I can definitely respect your opinion and explanation but I personally don’t like JZ’s persona so
I think it’s all a matter of what matters more important to the rapper and his core audience. Being respected as a great lyricist or selling out shows. Jay is a good lyricist but, in my opinion, Em and Nas are way better. The fact that Jay Z has more influence than them and may sell out more shows won’t negate the fact that he’s not the greatest lyricist that ever did it. I prefer to listen to rappers that say things that are clever and that I can relate to. So that’s why Jay is not IT for me. He’s good, but he’s not the best.

I think it’s all a matter of what matters more important to the rapper and his core audience. Being respected as a great lyricist or selling out shows. Jay is a good lyricist but, in my opinion, Em and Nas are way better. The fact that Jay Z has more influence than them and may sell out more shows won’t negate the fact that he’s not the greatest lyricist that ever did it. I prefer to listen to rappers that say things that are clever and that I can relate to. So that’s why Jay is not IT for me. He’s good, but he’s not the best.

I love Nas. He’s clever and witty but I don’t put him in the boring smart rapper category. But you’re right, some of the “conscious” rappers do bore me to tears.
that_VA_thickchick but being a great lyricist doesnt mean anything other than you rap incredibly well. like was just said royce raps just as good or better than Eminem but look at the difference in their careers. Nas is a great lyricist but he doesnt consistently put out great albums. Wearing that crown is more than who can rap the best. they may be great lyricist but suck at other aspects of song writing. Jordan wasnt the best scorer in the game, best rebounder, best passer. but he did all those things at a high level probably better than anybody we seen at that point and that elevated him to the status he at. rap works the same

When I look for music to buy, download, listen to…I wanna hear great lyrics and good music overall. I’m not looking for who’s most popular.
Look at who’s on the radio these days, Trinidad James and 2 Chainz. They may be able to sell out a show but that won’t have any influence on whether or not I listen to their music. That’s why I said, FOR ME and some other folk, it’s more about the better lyricist. Others care about popularity and who’s wearing the crown.

i didnt speak on because you are popular you are the greatest. some people are popular because they gather that respect. same way maxwell and sade can be gone for years and put out a cd and tour and sell out everywhere because they are respected to that level. its plenty of artist who are hot for the minute and then they fizzle out. to be at the top of the game for over 15 years is something to be celebrated because its something we dont have in the rap game. im not trying to sway your opinion on who to like but moreso paint a picture of why he cant be touched in the game. and respected lyricist will name him in their top list.
