Authorities have identified a gunman who went on a shooting rampage in the nation’s capital today.
Aaron Alexis, 32, was shot dead during the rampage that left at least 12 people dead, including 2 Capital police officers, and scores more injured.
A second gunman is still on the loose. He is described as a black male in his 50s. According to the AP, the search for a 2nd gunman has been called off.
A white male wearing a tan outfit was mistakenly identified as a third gunman as confusion reigned in the aftermath of the shooting.
“The white male in the tan outfit has been identified and is not a suspect or person of interest,” the Metropolitan DC Police Department tweeted.
Police say Alexis gained access into the heavily secured Navy Yard by flashing the photo ID of a terminated employee.
A source told The NY Post that the Fort Worth, Texas, resident had the ID of a former employee, Rollie Chance, who was recently fired by the Defense Department. Authorities are trying to determine how Alexis obtained Chance’s ID.
Alexis — who was arrested for firing a gun in 2010 — was armed with an assault rifle, a handgun, and a long rifle.
Navy employee Todd Brundivge told NBC the shooter was silent as he methodically fired at everything that moved.
“No words. He raised the gun and started firing. He said nothing,” Brundivge told NBC.
Navy Cmdr. Tim Jirus told The Post the shooting began soon after he arrived at work around 8:45 a.m.
“It’s crazy. You come to work on a Monday, and the next thing you know, there are people inside your building shooting the people you work with,’’ he said.
