Rapper A$AP Rocky spends as much time disputing gay rumors as he does in the recording booth. In an effort to squash the rumors, Rocky has linked himself to well-known beards such as singer Rihanna and Chris Brown’s longtime lover Karrueche Tran.
What was supposed to be a LGBT rights promotional bonanza turned into an awkward moment during MTV’s Video Music Awards when Rocky was asked to stand alongside gay former NBA player Jason Collins to introduce Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Mary Lambert.
But A$AP seemed very hesitant about sharing the stage with Collins. Instead of introducing the group as planned, Rocky shouted out A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord album. When he finally did get around to introducing the group, Rocky pointed to Collins when saying the word “homosexuality.”
Rocky must have realized his mistake when pro-gay bloggers reached out to him for an explanation of his actions. TheStashed.com subtly explained to Rocky that his apparent discomfort was being translated as homophobic.
After careful consideration, Rocky apologized to Collins in a statement to The Stashed:
I’m mad that my facial expressions was like that because I’m not homophobic at all, and that whole thing just came off real homophobic. I didn’t really notice it until I got home and saw it. I apologize to Jason for that, because people was laughing and shit, and you know… I really don’t think that’s funny. I saw they were making all the memes and pictures and making fun of him. There’s people out there that think I was doing that to be funny, and truthfully I got gay people in my family. I don’t give a fuck if you gay or you not, I just found it odd that MTV wanted to stand me next to this nigga when they are talking about gay people, that’s all. You know what I’m saying?
