Talk show Diva Wendy Williams executive produced the widely panned Aaliyah biopic TV movie that aired over the weekend. The backlash on Black Twitter ranged from casual disinterest to naked outrage. You would think Black Twitter users were related to Aaliyah the way they reacted.
They could have simply turned the channel if they didn’t like the movie. Instead they tuned in and gave Wendy the highest rating of a TV movie this weekend. But we all know how rude and disrespectful Black Twitter can be when they think they’re anonymously hiding behind their computer monitors.
Miss Wendy took the negative backlash in stride on her #1 rated daytime talk show this morning.
“I see my Aaliyah movie broke the Internet this weekend. Errybody got an opinion,” she joked during the “Hot Topics” segment of her wildly popular Wendy Show.

I’m embarrassed to say that I watched the whole thing, and as morbid as it sounds – I wanted to see the plane crash and how family and friends dealt with it in the aftermath. To end on a wave was an… interesting ending.
The thing that made this flick a hit is that, as bad as it was, people wouldn’t really know how terrible it really was WITHOUT watching, so, you win because the topic (Aaliyah) was something that people were vested in and WANTED to revisit and despite the internet buzz and fan and family backlash, you watched HOPING to see a great film… you didn’t realize just how horrible it was until AFTER the film was over and you were left dumbfounded. Wendy wins… this time. She loses because nobody will trust her the NEXT time.
It didn’t help that she cast Lisa Wu as Missy. Elise Neal as Gladys Knight. And Charlamagne as R. Kelly.
