Former New England Patriots’ wide receiver Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of 1st degree murder and other felony charges today.
A Massachusetts jury convicted Hernandez of shooting his friend Odin Lloyd to death in June 2013.
Hernandez, 25, showed no reaction or emotion when the foreperson read the unanimous verdict aloud in the courtroom.
Hernandez’s mother and fiancée burst into tears, as Hernandez mouthed the words “It’s OK,” to them.
Lloyd’s mother, who sat in the front row near Hernandez’s family, cried and pumped her fist in the air as the verdict was read. She and other relatives embraced the prosecution team and thanked them.
He was also found guilty of “extreme atrocity or cruelty” for shooting Lloyd six times. The murder weapon was never found.
Hernandez will receive a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Before he is sentenced today, Lloyd’s girlfriend, Shaneah Jenkins — the younger sister of Hernandez’s fiancée — will make a witness impact statement. She is estranged from her sister, Shayanna Jenkins, who faces a perjury charge of lying 26 times to the grand jury.
