Universal’s biopic Straight Outta Compton eviscerated the competition to grab the #1 spot on the box office charts this weekend. ‘Compton’ took in $57.4 million in ticket sales.
The F. Gary Gray-directed film sanitizes NWA (niggas with attitudes) as a white-washed social justice group that was torn apart by external influences. When in fact NWA was ripped apart by their own greed and internal strife after recording just 2 albums.
The film’s box office success didn’t come without controversy.
Many in the black community criticized Universal for backing a film about a group of misfit misogynists who weren’t shy about their hatred for a particular class of black women.
To this day, former group members Dr. Dre, MC Ren and Ice Cube still refer to black women as “bitches” and “hoes”.
Probably due to the growing controversy, Universal Studios and the movie’s producers Ice Cube and Dr. Dre marketed the movie to predominantly white audiences.
Much was made of the studio spending millions of dollars providing heavy security at theaters to protect white patrons from NWA’s fans.
From Deadline Hollywood:
Universal/Legendary’s Straight Outta Compton raised the roof this weekend for a dramatic biopic, on track for a $57.4M opening weekend per industry estimates. Universal figures have it lower at $56.09M at 2,757 theaters. Astounding numbers in any case for a summer drama. Consider the fact that Compton is beating the openings of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation ($55.5M) and potentially Ant-Man ($57.2M) and that’s with nearly 1,200 fewer theaters! Among August opening records, Compton is sixth. However, its FSS beats the first weekends of such August tentpoles Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8M), G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra ($54.7M) and Rush Hour 3 ($49.1M).
I actually like the movie. Didnt think I would. It really connected with so much of conflict we have going on in this day and age. My only complaint is that the only topless gals were darkskin. So lightskinned girls don’t like showing their sunny side ups?
Not sure if I want to support after seeing Dr.dre apology for beating that woman back in the day..
Yasss. Stand up black folks.
Sorry. Without NWA it woulda been no: Snoop, the whole entire G-funk movement with Nate and ‘nem, Bone Thugs…Eminem. ..whole lot of music. Too much to list.
Their music was the soundtrack to important events that shaped us (and continues to do so) as far as police brutality in our community. 25 PLUS years later.
Do your homework Sway.
so now im going to have to deal with a bunch of white people telling me I don’t know what im talking about cause they saw the movie. in order to tell the real story they would need one of the real gangster that just don’t care. like mi’chelle, suge, or easy z(rip)- I think dre got too much money now to let that happen.
Liked the movie… BUT they left out BG Knocc Out and Dresta
#shrugs Mysognistic, maybe but you can’t deny the influence they had/have on rap to this day They were definitely game changers…. I want to see the movie though…I heard it was really good…
………………
Yessssss…….you would have thought he could have apologized without using profanity. I thought he was more of a businessman now
Yes, they changed the game, and none of the changes were positive.
Once a lowlife thug, always a lowlife thug.
I started my sentence by agreeing with SR that they were mysognists. That doesn’t change the fact that rap wouldn’t be what it is today without them…
Funny story….i saw it last nite… LOVED IT… But at the concession stand the W-boy asked what we were seeing.. so I said straight outta compton he goes on to say ice cube sold out and he WILL see it but he ain’t messing with cube LOL I’m bouta read his a z z his rights but my boo said come on that muhfuccka stoopied? I swear these white ppl are past delusional ?
Ok really like who cares
That movie was the bomb
I was thinking the same thing how u gone show the ice cube vs nwa beef but not the easy vs dre beef? But great movie thou
Only greed i seen was eazy and heller cutting out the rest of the group money cube wrote 90 percent of the records and dre produced 100 percent of the records nothin wrong with wanting what u deserve
The movie was good. American Culture ??
And I liked how they showed the Rodney King news feeds again. Same ish going on 25 yrs later.
Pigs
I agree. The integrity of rap was significantly degraded by NWA’s “contribution.”
I haven’t seen it yet…im waiting for the 20ish crowd to get out my way.
I just left from seeing it! ?? Great movie, but tell me why on Fri & Sat they had extra police patrols & today they had a movie attendant at the door of the theater checking ticket stubs & ids?! ?
so we are gonna act like some women aren’t in fact bitches and hoes *sips tea*
For the folks saying nothing positive came out of NWA. The fact that freedom of speech was finally incorporated and extended to the hip-hop/rap genres. Hip-hop would not have grown without it. Because of them that is possible. American culture indeed.
“The No. 1 thing that stands out to me is the impact that (they’ve) had on people being able to say what they want, especially in rap,” says Billboard senior editor Alex Gale. “They were really purposefully pushing the boundaries, even down to the curse words.” Now, “it’s hard to imagine how hip-hop and pop culture would’ve developed without them really kicking that door down.”
Yo mama didn’t care enough obviously FOH
Nah they’re all delicate flowers.
I couldn’t help with rapping along either LOL
Hmmmp I used to sneak and record over my gospel cassette tapes JUST SO I could listen to my rap in piece on my Sony Walkman
Moms would’ve jooked me up by the collar if she had known ???
“Ferguson, the ‘Hands Up’ movement and ‘I Can’t Breathe’ were all happening during filming”
25 years after Rodney King and the clips shown during the movie, were powerful. And brought back memories. The verdict being read and broadcast and the reactions. All of it. ALL of it.
Kona
I still believe Jerry Heller poisoned Eazy E. Eazy E’s death was my FIRST hip-hop conspiracy theory!
They did eff up though by showing a Bank of America tower. They weren’t around back then.
Signed,
Rose Scowlor ?
When Cube bust up the Priority Record exec office I saw that modern laptop too.
Roads Skolah too. ?
I dnt really care to see it
They shoulda had ah Rose on the payroll & Rant it past us first
Snorts ??
I was just telling my girls’ about that conspiracy theory.
Yes
Thank you for your comment
Me too! My doorter was like Ma’?
I told Dub20 years ago! She was like ma! It might frfr be true. Jerry didn’t bank on Eric marrying Tomica on his deathbed. Ruthless was gonna belong to who?
Tomica didn’t turn out to be a bed of roses either, but they GAT Jerry with that marriage trump card. Got em!?
But is that a good thing? Rap is responsible for multiple deaths and mayhem due to idiots taking the fake gangsta rap lifestyle seriously.
Now, “it’s hard to imagine how hip-hop and pop culture would’ve developed without them really kicking that door down.”
^^^^^
Again I say how is that a good thing? They made it cool for kids to curse and call each other niggers?
I’ve told my girls before, but I hit them w/so much info they get overwhelmed ? I saw Eazy’s daughter tweeting she was doing a documentary to expose the truth.
Same for heavy metal and school shootings huh??
Kids can say that and DID well before NWA.
Freedom of speech I was speaking of is: FBI stepped out of line with the letter against NWA of encouraging “violence against and disrespect” for law enforcement officers.
We can now say wtf we WANT about law enforcement.
You totally missed the point. Cussing and niggas was again present on wax prior to NWA
Tomica was planted. She literally came outta no damn where. With the whole I got biz/industry knowledge shyt. I think Tomica was planted by someone who wanted to uncover Jerry’s BS. I hope the daughter come with the tea
this. all of this.
Rap is responsible for multiple deaths? Like movies/video games “made” kids shoot up schools or The Dark Night caused that lunatic to shoot up that movie theatre in CO…I guess….. I was in elementary school when NWA was popular but even I know there wouldn’t be a Tupac,B.I.G #gasp T.I without gangsta rap..
Is heavy metal a good thing? Both heavy metal and rap are garbage. They ruined the music industry. R&B was all good until garbage rap came along.
Violent video games influenced school shooters and other psychotic murderers. Sure, if those people weren’t mentally unstable they would not be influenced so easily. But violent video games are a factor just like alcohol is a factor in drunk driving. As far as 2 Pac, Biggie and T.I., they still would be stars if gangsta rap didn’t exist. We’re talking about a different a genre of music. Rap and gangsta rap are different animals.
I watched it too and there were a variety of topless girls in the movie, light and dark. There was a light-skinned girl at the mansion pool party and she was completely naked. I was like o_O
I sent NakeyaJ the homework on Friday? The ish was pure published back in 1995 IN the LA Times! Tomica is vile. Bone Thugs didn’t break up. Her almost purposeful mismanagement of Ruthless bankrupted them! She wanted the label to stay profitable enough for HER to get paid
that’s what i am not understanding i know so many of those types of women and to be truthful i have been that and more for a long period of time in my life. also it is sad when people won’t let someone live and hold them to something they did long ago and not even do it to them. and even more sad, we only supposed to watch them for entertainment purposes their personal life and issues are not my business. and my last point i was cursing, lying and stealing when i was four years old and i am now 49.
Booooooooo. ???
Even my 65 yo mama was in there yesterday citing at the very LEAST Tupac.
Don’t do that to hip-hop Sandra.???
Outkast? TI didn’t do good things to music? Hell Luda?
Stawp?
Dre and Cube are LEGALLY robbing white folks now! I mean that in itself is like “well DAMN” to me. They JUST literally saw their homeboy being robbed by a damn Jew 20 years ago. To turn the absolute TABLES on some shyt like that is nothing less of phenomenal. Ijs.
They actually blocked it out in my town, so the nearest theater showing it is 30 minutes away. Ironic because the director is from here, but they refused to show it. I guess I gotta go to the ‘white folks’ side of town to catch it.
Religion is responsible for a lot of deaths more than rap music, Religion has created wars that have been going on for years.
The first time I heard a woman called a bitch and a hoe was in the church way before rap music was on the scene. If a woman had on makeup or did something unladylike she was forced to stand up in the church and to be shamed in front of everyone. This started in the church way before rap music. Why aren’t men called bitches and hoes when they are the one’s creating them and yet we women chase them as if they are the grand prize at the fair.
Agreed…and I’m waiting for red box on this one. Got l.a. pride to the bone but I’ll take east coast, followed by the south before I listen to gangsta rap.
That is crazy & actually quite sad to hear. I remember during my teen years they used to do stuff like that around my way. ?
NWA was a CIA op created to mainstream Gangsta Rap (Gang/Drug culture) and influence the then young black generation to become nothing but a bunch of cracked out gang zombies. And they succeeded, incarceration rates soared tremendously putting over 5 billion dollars annually into the prison industrial complex. Government spending for police departments increased by billions. Millions of black families destroyed by crack and gang violence. Millions of black men killed off (significantly reducing our current population). Now 20+ years later they’ve made a #1 blockbuster film about it. Way to go America Mission Accomplished!
Jerry was involved but them CIA boys poisoned him.
Cube and Dre did sell out tho.
So lame. But if only light skinned girls were shown, you all would be saying they dont like or didnt want anyone dark skinned. An all black movie was number one and this is what you want to gripe about?
Men calling women the B word will not and should not be taken seriously, as long as gay men and black women think its cute to call themselves the B word. Just like the N word is seen as a term of endearment so non blacks thought it was cool to say it. Too many women think it empowers them when they call themselves B’s. So the whole they call black women this and that goes totally over my head. I wont answer to it, so I dont care how someone uses it. I just tell myself that its an animal call for their mama’s.
Co-sign.
about time a movie with some substance rules. no robots or half neked thots or unfunny comediens.
Maybe I wasnt paying attention that well to notice all the naked women scenes lol
So I guess you just gonna gloss over the first part of my comment that praises the movie and it’s central theme? A movie can be amazing but still have faults.
I don’t think cube did I think he grew into the perfect entertainer
I’ve had loved ones murdered by ruthless thugs; so, I’m not entertained by people who glorify ignorance and violence.
What????
+1
Dr Dre waited for the movie to come out to Appologize for beating up Michel’e?? Like 30 years later?? How manly..
West Coast rap I remember was more about the street life, Easy-E dying of Aids, the “Cript”, and some very crazy issues with the police…
I haven’t seen the movie, but I am sure they “glamorized” so the yt wouldn’t be afraid. West Coast Gansta Rap wasn’t like East Coast Hip Hop… not because it is a Black movie that it has to be supported by all… still not sure about wanting to see a movie when I know how they treated their women during those times…
Good Morning Roses. Day one down, all I can say is that some kids need more than time out.
We getting a James Harrison post? I wholeheartedly agree with him. I’m looking for a biddie football league right now that keeps score
I DIDN’T SEE IT…WAS IT GOOD??
I never listened to N.W.A but I love a goodt conspiracy theory, I gotta do the education.
What Dr. Dre said was no apology as far as I am concerned. He was trying to downplay what he did to Dee Barnes and Michel’e. I won’t be supporting this garbage and seeing so many of my Sorors hyping this mess makes me want to vomit.
Morning Love
Idk about Harrison.
I thought it was “un-need” lesson; its a trophy and when he signed them up, they tell you about it. Its not like this is high school. Also, I didn’t see the correlation between receiving a trophies and being a “men” : So if it was a girl can she keep her trophy? Do you really need to put that much pressure on a child? What happens when all the other kids have trophies and you child is feeling less than? Keeping score is fine but don’t take away a trophy they have already received b/c YOU want to teach a lesson that is only going to cause tears. IMO
#6God #PettyPapi #SingingNinja
Also Harrison’s a dyck. lol
Morning Folks
So happy for these guys. The movie was fantastic and white washed enough to be palatable enough to be enjoyed by the masses. Jason Mitchell killed it as Eazy E. I meant to go again this past weekend but I food poisoned myself. I’ll definately go again next weekend.
I watched the interview that Kendrick Lamar did with them for Billboard and he cursed a lot there too. He’s a curser like Dr. Simone on Married to Medicine. Some people just curse a lot. I’m glad he finally addressed it at all.
Good Morning! I have to ask. How did you food poison yourself?
These kinds of movies are never totally true. Hollywood always gotta throw a spin on it. At least the truth is out there. I personally don’t need to see that beating he gave Dee Barnes. It was bad enough reading about it.
I can’t agree with that. They were rapping about their reality. The reason for their reality is crack cocaine. That is what turned the hood into a war zone.
Chile….I made crabs on Friday and left the leftovers out all night then ate them joints the next day. It wasn’t nothing nice. My neck and eyes were swollen from all the vomiting.
Bird! Why would you do that?!?! You know you have better sense…lol
Bless you. Hope you’re feeling better today. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids if you’re not already.
What the heck does that even mean? What did they do to sell out, rise to the top of the game? Was Eazy a sellout too? If he were alive he’d probably be even richer than them.
Oh, my! Glad you’re doing better. Food poison is the worse. The one time I had it, I was all but praying for death to come take me!
Sad to say, it ain’t the first time. I have shell fish addiction. When I was preggers with my first baby, I ate so many raw clams that I wound up in the emergency room. Nary a crab will go to waste on my watch. I’m a Jersey Shore girl. What can I say?
They sell outs bc they didn’t DIE in the streets and made something out of themselves…They also take care and raise their children….Duh bird.
Bird, I love shellfish but I love my INSIDES being on the inside more…You gets all the Gifs…ALL OF THEM. lol
They were just as light handed with Eazy in the movie as they were with Dre. They tried to make it seem like Jerry was leading Eazy astray when Eazy had all the power. Dre didn’t produce all the music. DJ Yella was a producer too.
That’s interesting. I don’t believe in conspiracy theories but they all seem pretty mainstream today, and I’m not sure how hard they were back then. I will put my money on studio gangstas. Especially that woman beater Dr. Dre. You know these types will NEVER take responsibility for the harm they’ve done to our community, and most of us will NEVER hold them accountable. These kids are influenced by these types, and some of them lack the home training that sets a better example. It’s very sad.
Sandy we been saying the n-word every since the white man told us that’s what we are before we knew his language. They didn’t invent that or make it any more widely used.
I loved it! I am so happy that it was a well put together project. The acting was good. The story line was well paced. Ice Cube’s son did his thing! And I love how we showed up and didn’t show out in the theater. Yassss huny! The black dollar is mighty. We just proved that. Now if only we can build schools and scholarship funds with this gusto. It would be amazing.
The members of NWA are in their late 40s and early 50s and so are their fans. There weren’t an overabundance of youngins in the theater when I saw it, but I went to the 5:00 show. Maybe the crowd got younger later.
GM yall.
Morning WHIT!
In the theater where I saw it, they didn’t have the movie poster hanging anywhere nor did the spell out the title anywhere. It was Straight Out on tickets, the ticket kiosk and the sign over the theaters. They petrified of black folk. SMH
Love love loved the movie! Phenomenal from beginning to end. If a movie that’s 2 and a 1/2 hours long can hold my attention and I NOT go to sleep? Bravo, well done Black men. Well done.
didn’t go see it, I do not do movies. im glad for Dre/Cube
mehh Screw the one’s that don’t like it. Damn If Ya do DAMN IF Ya Don’t!
Morning Khakiitheotherwhitemeat
Sup *Bruh Man nod*
You don’t have any sense at all!
Wow. Just wow. And what are the men? And do real men sit around and call women out their names in that manner? Even if she is a woman of ill repute?
The faces of Wicked Israelites (Judah in particular)..
Sup? LOL NWA got you all ratchet this morning lol.. J/K Why my kids 13,11 came to us thinking they were going to school us on this new to them show they came across??? We were like Chile please we watched every season of Martin…. That ain’t new to us lol
Someone is going to tell me on this blog why in the fugg Dr. Dre still gets dragged for beating a woman azz 25 years ago, had to do community service, probation, and PSA’s…yet Chris Brown gets swept under the rug for beating the entire hell outta Robyn a mere 6 years ago. Or maybe he ain’t get swept under? His damn music still selling no?
Wrong is wrong. You can’t pick and choose. And if you do…wtf is the criteria? I am going to KEEP asking this here ish til someone gives a good answer
They played you back then, and they still playing you now…
Negros will learn the hard way tho….
Hey hun
That means they sold out their own ppl for riches and fame. What is the overall message NWA promoted? It’s should be obvious. The destruction the movie The Players Club caused among our women should be enough of an example for you to see they will exploit their own ppl to no end for financial gain, that’s a sell out.
You mean they grew up.
I know/agree Dubb
this is the land of NO second chance, crabs in a barrel and all the gooey stuff in between.
Chris Brown’s issues do NOT get swept under the rug.
Yew Fcuk UP YEW go to the depths of hell, no 2nd chance!
This was a group that was created to change what hip hop once was, and that was certainly not the violence and misogynistic message that came from gangsta rap. This group shows once more the appropriation of our culture, and how those that are not even of the race , or culture can come exploit young men who had nothing , and lived in a very violent world to get them to take hip hop somewhere it should not have gone. You dangle fame and money in front of your impressionable men such as they were , what do you think they’re going to do, not take it. With their music ,yeah they changed the game, and the lives of so many black youths who are still in jail to this day. Glamorizing a lifestyle that Dr. Dre , and Ice Cube certainly do not live at this time, however the seeds they planted with the help of the racist music industry has certainly flourished , and continues to flourish to this day. Disrespect of black women, and themselves, drug dealing , love of money, no natural affection for anyone , or anything. Yeah they changed the game alright!
I know that there are, but there is ususally a reason for it. Ain’t no need to be calling them names. Plus that tends to spill over to women who have not earned the title. Right now plenty of dudes are putting that title on Ciara when that’s not what she is. Coincidently I had that very conversation with Ice Cube’s entourage back in the 90s after one of them had the audacity to call me a bish at the hotel after one of Cube’s concerts in Houston. After I tried to fight they azz it turned into an all night conversation. It was really cool. I hope I made them think twice before calling a woman a bish in the future.
Somebody on this damn blog owns a pair of them dumb azz Beats headphones, a copy of the damn Chronic, or knows the words to “Still D.R.E”
Miss me with the fugg azz BS.
Your azz done probably watched “This Christmas” with Chris Brown azz in it too and listen to his damn version at Christmas time too. Cut the CHIT folks.
I think folks just want the opportunity to ride him since the internet and social media didn’t exist then. Celebs are more accessible and they can access our opinions too. But your are right. At the same time, people been buying Beats and supporting his artists and projects for the past 25 years too. So they are kind of in the same boat, no?
Hey boo!
one of them had the audacity to call me a bish at the hotel
_______________
Expound. You was in the hotel lobby waiting on ’em? Trying to getcha groupie on? Deets please.
Agree and cosign. I can’t take the fake azz caring and taking up causes when it suits.
My last shelter is named Interact. In our old YWCA building. Half these folks don’t eem know the name of theirs. But wanna cite some 25 yo incident.
Smdh.
We currently have 3 pairs of Beats at our house. Nuthing but a G thang was my ish… And I love This Christmas we watch it as a family. Especially when Baby get on stage and they think he’s going to freeze up and he kills “Try a little Tenderness”
I ain’t got the answers Sway. Some people don’t want to forgive him. And not everyone forgives Chris Brown. Neither Dre or Chris Brown are hurting tho. Enough people still fugg with boff of ’em.
Black people–as a Collective (both male first, then female) are soo simple & unlearned.
Never wanna take responsibility for nothing. Always running from DISCIPLINE and the TRUE WORD OF GOD….
I bet there is at least one black person on this blog who thinks wicked negros like eazy e, dr. dre, and that entire wicked group are just gonna pay their way and Walk into Heaven on Judgement Day…
Simple as hell.
I’m so tired of this argument. Are we supposed to believe that people didn’t live like this? Once rap grew in popularity, everyone was going to do it. How can an artist take on a medium and not use their own life as inspiration? They only made the music. The public made them legendary. Something in their message spoke to the the people. Art imitated life here. Don’t be mad at the group. Be mad at the circumstance. Like they were, hence their name and content of their music.
NEW POST
I was only gone 20 mins and I am sew confused but I have never like Dr. Dre…I think it is bc Dr. Dre has a history of beating women..we only know of one incident of CB’ both wrong but Dr. Dre beats women.
I like that movie. I have never cared for Dr. Dre meh but that was before his abusive history…something about…kinda like Jay …I just don’t care for their music.
They tried to say that I shouldn’t have been at the hotel if I wanted to be respected. As I told them, I had been to after parties in the past and had a good time with no hanky panky. Cube is the one that advertised the after party on stage. We were going at it in the hallway. I was all up in dude’s face calling him a fatherless child and what not. Security came and broke us up, but by then several dudes were watching us and one of them said, we need to finish this conversation so I went to the room with them. They told me that ususally they just want to screw women that come to the hotel. I told them that I hung with YZ (Who is the man with the master plan?) and he was really nice and took us all to breakfast the next morning. They said he was a muslim. I guess muslim artists are more well behaved. They said girls from up north are differant than women from other regions. They pointed out that my homegirl (who was from Houston) ran off with Cube’s bodyguard despite the fact that I was about to get in a fight with a man. I hadn’t even seen her leave. But my girl wasn’t a bish nor a hoe so despite what she did I wasn’t going to let her wear that either. Like I said, it was a very interesting conversation. At some point Cube came in the room because his weed carrier (as Sandra calls them) was in there and he wanted to smoke. The reason why I got called a bish from jump was because the dude had offered me some chronic but couldn’t find any paper and dudes had started hitting on me, including one of the H-Town twins and I wasn’t there for that so I said I was leaving and he said “F%#$ you then bish”. Cube said something similar to him when he said he couldn’t find any paper and left. LOL!
Preach! The Jews and white people who run the industry are getting MUCH richer than the puppets, I mean rappers. However, they would never disrespect their own youth, culture, and heritage. Gangsta rap was destructive. Yes, the seeds are flourishing in 2015.
I like that movie. I love the Chronic and every beat daggone near Dre ever did. I had my Beats stolen off my desk at work and my ex bf still don’t know, nor will he ever cause they were a gift. That is my point hun. Thank you.
Like who you like. Same with dislike. But don’t use women beating as a cover up or excuse. When its such an important issue. If you hate Dre muscle azz face…say that.
If you hate Breezy cause he like noodle eaters. Say that.
Don’t say he beat up Robyn if you need an excuse. Same with Dre and Dee and his BM. If that is really why that is okay too. But I think some folks could honestly GAF LESS.
Cause your azz most likely didn’t boycott. Stop being fake righteous.
*drops mic*?
Cool Story! I can totally picture you in that hallway going off on old dude. Lol! What did they mean with the women up north being different than women down south. Down south women were hoes? While women from the north were bishes?
You missing the point completely.
I’m in my feelings. I just got curbed by you….”pause”
Ma’am you just described my household ?
People live all type of lives , why not bring positive lives to the forefront. Yeah it’s true people lived or live that way, my point was why glamorize a lifestyle that again is misogynistic, lacking self respect, as well as respect for anything. Rap music initially was not about that , it was about dancing , looking good , and having a good time. The music industry knew how gangsta rap would negatively affect those who perhaps lived that life already, and those who thought is was cool to live a miserable life selling drugs, disrespecting women , chasing money by any means,, because of the imagery they brought to impressionable youth.
Why do you think you’re the only person on the blog who helps their community? Why would you automatically assume that? Because we’re Black, we don’t volunteer?
Glad they had a great opening weekend! The movie was RELLY good and all the media folks I know liked it and it was well targeted amongst the African American community throughout the country…don’t know.
Crabs? What do you call those who promote and get wealthy from negative representation, all the while encouraging the youth to become criminals and portray themselves as the women they turn around and call bitch and ho?
They tried to claim that women from up north were more proud and self aware while southern and Cali girls were pretty much sack chasers. SMH. It’s all in how you treat em. When me and my girls hung out with YZ in his room one of his boys kept trying to pretty much rape my friend. She kept fighting him off and she was from a small town in Texas so not all Southern girls are sack chasers. And when I had the opportunity to do a pro athlete I did it and my mama even told me to try to hook him by cooking him so chitlins and she’s from Jersey just like me. Sheet we just trying to get wifed. That goes for all of us.
No babe. I’m agreeeing. We like stuff woman beaters put out and it’s okay to do so.
Great Job by Cube. That Eazy death scene had me misting up
I read about that. Oh well. Their loss. It’s worth the drive.
I did not. My point is that the art reflected their circumstance. And the fact that people related to it made it popular. And groups like this inspired many other greats to rebel and speak their minds. You think the Kanye Wests of the world don’t appreciate NWA?
My other point is what came first, the chicken or the egg? The government creating the hood and flooding it with drugs and weapons or gangster music? Then from gangster music is trap music. What do they all have in common? People coming from the worst circumstances but using their creativity to make it out.
I know its not pretty. I wish it was too. But I’m not going to stand in judgement. After all, WE determine what music sells.
You get it!
…..and songs that kid pee’er on’ers sing.
If anything the message of the movie highlighted the pitfalls of that industry. I didn’t get from the movie: Great Strippers and the Men Who Love to Hate Them.
What else you do this weekend? *side eye* LOL
You mean like how Ray Charles put sexual lyrics to gospel music corrupted our youth? Or how Marilyn Manson put gothic murderous lyrics to rock music corrupted our youth? Or how Madonna made being a whore a core theme for pop music corrupted our youth? Or Bobby Brown grinding on stage corrupted youth? Salt and Pepper never rapped about killing folks, but they could be credited for the creation of the original THOTS.
Since when is music all about higher moral fiber? You REALLY think the youth who were in gangs, selling drugs, and committing crimes at the time, did so because of NWA? And not because “Is life worth living? Should I blast myself? I’m tired of bein’ poor and even worse I’m black. My stomach hurts, so I’m lookin’ for a purse to snatch.”
I’ve been a rebel and revolter from the womb. I remember saying the same thing in church, school, and home; if women are bad and nasty, what are the men who lay with them?
Deacons and Pastors.
Dammit Shay! Girl…you betta…come on! Say that!
I hear what you are saying.
Oh, how I needed this right here this morning.
Oh ok. I get that. But Eazy created their gangsta sound. It wasn’t the label that told them to do it. By that definition every drug dealer is a sell out. I don’t totally disagree though.
When you put out certain imagery to reach the masses, then yes I does affect them, although some may have already been living that lifestyle , even more began to live the lifestyle because the imagery was glamorized. Make fast money , get women, get high etc. And yes the other artist you mentioned also had their own negative affect.
I don’t subscribe to that way of thinking. I loved Lil Kim as a young person. I still didn’t sleep around. I think people want to control and stifle a message that makes them uncomfortable. When truth be told, it is works like this (and other media) that gives the masses a glimps into a life they wouldn’t know about. You think the news is telling the real story? We don’t own media outlets. But us being a melodic people can reach far beyond the means of the nightly news. Why shouldn’t young people have the right to tell their story? I see this as motivation to change the circumstance that inspired these works.
If you can relate to the likes of NWA, I guarantee there was a hood dude rolling around in a nice car, with a lot of jewelry, hosting big parties and bbqs that had a lot more influence on you than a rap group. Every hood had an Easy E or a Larry Hoover. But I respect your difference in opinion.
You have to admit though, we should be proud of this production. It was a good movie.
Eh..i do have a 20 year old he and all his buddies did go and prolly ran off all the ole heads..i never enter a movie theater past the matinee times anymore.?
Beats By Dre (BBD) headphones are (horribly) acoustically inferior to even a mid-grade headphone. That’s unfortunate, considering the price. It’s amusing watching folks in the gym ‘flex’ wearing BBD. Knowledge is power, friends. Do your homework before buying electronics or anything of high dollar value.
LOVED IT! Wanna go again. I’ve been crushing on Aldis Hodge (MC Ren).
Great movie I was pleased.
Things are still very segregated in the ‘Burg, unfortunately.
I don’t give celebrity sweeps under the rug. If you’re a big superstar then you should have enough money to have a fixer fix your problem before it becomes a scandal. Once I hear the facts or enough rumors to consider you guilty, I’m done with you. There are plenty of celebrities on my Do Not Support List. I would add Chris Brown just for the fact that his voice hasn’t changed from sounding like a high-pitch teenager.
Is this the movie that had controversy surrounding the casting call of the women?

It sure was. Had women broken down to a letter grade system. Guess who ended in the D category? But its a number 1 movie with an all black cast so let’s just shut up and smile

I went with my daughter and I thought it was really good. It is definitely Oscar worthy!
Just watched it and it blew my away!
Yella did Some producing but it still had to be approved by dre and dre would still add lil things to what yella came up with but noone was getting scared if they lose yella they all wanted dre
is it just me, or does Dr.Dre look like a cyborg from the future…he look like his head can open up and it would look like the inside of a computer…
i wasn’t talking about him being a woman beater. im talking about the whole situation. I think dre threw a spin on the whole movie. I usually don’t bootleg movies but this one I will. spin is one thing but cover up is another.
Yeah, cause everybody and their Great Great Grandpa has gone to see it and are raving about it lol…it is all about money.
