Outgoing President Obama extended an olive branch to President-elect Donald Trump during a 90 minute meeting in the Oval Office at the White House today.
Trump, 70, was surprised that the meeting lasted as long as it did.
“This was a meeting that was supposed to last for 10 or 15 minutes,” said Trump.
Obama said he had an “excellent” conversation with Trump. He stressed that his number 1 priority was to “facilitate a transition that ensures our president elect is successful”.
He said to Trump, “If you succeed, then the country succeeds.”
Obama seemed confident that the 2 men would hammer out their differences. He also said Michelle Obama met with the first lady-elect Melania Trump to make her feel welcome.
Trump told Obama it was a great pleasure meeting with him. He said he looked forward to sitting down with Obama many more times in the future.
They ended their historic meeting with a tense handshake.
After telling the pool of reporters that they wouldn’t take any questions, Obama leaned over to Trump and advised him not to take questions because the questions would keep coming.
“It’s always the last one,” Trump laughed. As the reporters laughed, Trump said Obama is a “very good man”.
The president-elect did not seem impressed with Obama’s little White House after living in his multimillion dollar, 2 full floors penthouse with gold fixtures in Trump Tower.
Outside, the White House staff cried as reality dawned on them that they will soon be unemployed.
