A 17-year-old seasonal Target employee is spending the holidays in jail after she was arrested for stealing $40,000 worth of Target gift cards.
The girl, who is not named, was working a cash register at a Target store in Conyers, GA when she was approached by 2 men with an offer she couldn’t refuse.
The men instructed the girl to swipe the gift cards at the register without accepting payment for them. The teen has been in the Rockdale County jail since last Sunday.
“I’m broken. This is a serious charge. This isn’t anything that can just go away like that,” her mother told Channel 2’s Carl Willis.
The mother had a warning for parents and employees who are enticed by the lure of quick cash during the holidays.
“Watch. Just watch, because there are a lot of scams going on everywhere and to kids, it sounds good to them,” she said.
According to Channel 2 WSB-TV News, the scam at the Conyers Target store may be linked to similar gift card thefts at Targets around the Metro Atlanta area.
WSB-TV — A theft ring with the exact same procedure was taken down at a Buckhead Target earlier this month and investigators believe it could be tied to yet another bust at a Peachtree City store days later.
In those cases, Target employees were recruited through social media and right in the store parking lots.
Every time it’s the cashier who gets arrested.
