A daughter and granddaughter of the late black nationalist Malcolm X were arrested for stealing a rental truck and abusing animals.
Police responding to a report of a stolen U-Haul truck arrested New Hampshire residents Malikah Saban Shabazz, 51, and her daughter Bettih Bahiyah Shabazz, 19, in a Walmart parking lot in southern Maryland on Wednesday.
Police report the U-Haul truck was carrying seven abused pit bull dogs that were housed in stacked crates. Some of the dogs had injuries.
The dogs were taken to an animal shelter in Maryland, according to the NY Daily News.
Mother and daughter were released from the Charles County jail on Thursday after posting $2,000 bond each.
The women were arrested in a Wal-Mart parking lot in La Plata, after the U-Haul truck was reported stolen to Vermont State Police.
Both women are charged with theft of a vehicle in excess of $10,000. Malikah is also charged with seven misdemeanor counts of animal abuse or neglect.
If convicted, both women face up to 20 years in prison and $20,000 in fines.
In 2011, Malikah was charged with stealing the identity of a 70-year-old woman and making credit card purchases totaling $55,000.
