Democrat Rep. Cedric Richmond was once well-respected. But he fell from grace when he cracked an off-color joke about White House consultant Kellyanne Conway.
Speaking at the Washington Press Club Foundation dinner in Washington, D.C. last week, Richmond said Conway “looked kind of familiar in that position there” in reference to a viral photo of Conway kneeling on an Oval Office sofa with her knees parted slightly.
It was a shameful thing for a supposedly god fearing man to say about a female.
CNN’s Jake Tapper told House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi that the joke was “sexist,” but Pelosi refused to condemn Richmond or ask him to apologize.
Richmond, who I guess is happily married, finally apologized to Conway late Sunday night, after many calls from Republicans to do the right thing.
“After a discussion with people I know and trust, I understand the way my remarks have been received by many,” Richmond said in a statement.
He added: “I have consistently been a champion for women and women’s issues, and because of that, the last thing I would want to ever do is utter words that would hurt or demean them. I apologize to Kellyanne Conway and everyone who has found my comments offensive.”
Maybe Richmond forgot it wasn’t that long ago when black men such as himself could only wait tables at the Washington Press Club.
