Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell released the 185-page draft of the healthcare bill that will repeal Obamacare on Thursday. The House approved the American Health Care Act (AHCA) and passed it on to the Senate for final approval. The healthcare bill fulfills President Trump’s campaign promise to get rid of Obamacare.
Democrats complained about the Senate’s secretive meetings to hammer out the final bill, saying the Senate wasn’t being transparent in it’s ongoing efforts to draft the bill. The same Democrats dismissed comparisons to their handling of Obamacare which was also crafted in secret.
House Minority Leader Nacny Pelosi famously said “we have to pass [Obamacare] so that you can find out what’s in it.”
President Trump called the 1st draft of the healthcare bill “mean” because itl didn’t cover pre-existing conditions. Trump urged the Senate to create a “more generous” bill so he can sign it into law.
Here’s what the Senate’s healthcare bill includes:
1. Repeals Obamacare
2. Eliminates the insurance mandate that forced Americans to pay unfair tax
3. Makes healthcare more affordable for Americans
4. Keeps the pre-existing condition mandate
Hundreds of protesters demonstrated outside the Capitol before they’ve even seen what’s in the bill.
Several Republican lawmakers said they would not approve the bill, which will prevent the passage of the bill. Critics accused the Republicans of trying to protect the financial interests of their millionaire buddies in the insurance industry.
