One loyal Sandrarose.com reader wrote in to express her disapproval of the way we covered the untimely death of the legendary news woman.
Loyal reader Pepper writes:
Good morning Auntie,
I am a loyal reader and occasionally I comment on a post or two on your site. Anyway, I saw the mugshot of Amanda Davis and without reading, I said, wow another DUI? Once I read the heartbreaking story that she died, I was taken aback. She was on her way to bury her stepfather and died. Why post her mugshot when announcing her death? I know, I know, it’s your blog, and if I’m not happy here, I can go elsewhere, dear. I know, I know.
However, Sandra this woman has a family, friends and is beloved in the Atlanta community. Death is not the time to post mugshots as if one google search would not have netted you hundreds of pictures to choose from. I am saddened that you would do this. Human decency, I know you have. In the past you have played with us and eluded that you may expose someone’s personal business, (Lala) and out of human decency you didn’t. I just thought you being in the Atlanta area, would not hit below the belt like this.
We all have a chapter in our lives that we don’t read aloud Sandra…
If possible please update the story with another picture, not her mugshot,
for respect to the Davis family.Pepper
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I didnt even notice it was a mug shot. May she rest in peace.
Well said. Very classy.
?????? to the person who wrote this
Thank you loyal reader…and thank you Sandra Rose for changing direction on this. a lot of ATL-IENS, and ATL-Transients have grown up with Ms. Davis in our living rooms. She was an important part of our community, even through the not so positive moments. She deserves respect.
I got a couple chapters not to be read out loud ever. She’s right, ya know. The mugshots and write ups on these personalities or celebrities will be around forever. A moment of silence can be afforded some moments of respect.
Someone on twitter would not let go of Amanda’s DUI. Like sis, we get it and all heard about it, so why now? She’s gone. But you know what, she never ran from her mistakes. Amanda DAvis was actually quite candid about her alcoholism when she did a radio interview years ago.
Atlanta always rooted for her and only wanted the best for Amanda. We will remember her at her best, doing what she did best -reporting the news. Godspeed, Amanda Davis. Condolences to her family and colleagues.
Very well-written letter! ??????
Isn’t this the same thing the White media does? When a Black person dies, especially at the hands of the police, they make sure they bring up their past transgressions, all but ignoring the fact that the person was unjustly murdered.
and so therefore, a black owned blog (or at least we think it’s black owned) should do what the white media does, or are we as this blog’s black supports should accept it, because the white media does the same?
Well, we’re not going to do or stand for what the white media does today. We’re going to uplift Ms. Davis for all her accomplishments and failures, because those failures contributed to someone’s triumph after learning of & relating to her struggles. R.I.P. Ms. Davis, we love you and you will greatly be missed!
Where did you come to that conclusion? No. I was making an comparison about how the White media treats Blacks and how a Black, or like you said, possibly Black, media should not be doing the same. I never said we should do it because the White media does it. Just the opposite.
As well as we shouldn’t. That’s the point I was trying to make. We should not be like them.
?????? Exactly
Got it. My bad. Forgive
Thank you Sandra Rose aka Auntie. I so appreciate you for hearing your people, Amanda’s people and changing the whole connotation of this article and making it a place where we can show love and respect to our beloved Amanda Davis, as she deserves.. She was definitely one of Atlanta’s sweethearts and she will sorely be missed!!!!!
That wasn’t so hard was it?
Apparently, several people misunderstood my post. I never said we should be like them. I said sometimes we imitate them, and it’s wrong. They bring up our past to use against us and that’s what Sandra did when she pointed out this poor lady had a DUI. Black-owned media shouldn’t do the same thing White-owned media does. I hope that clears up any misconception that I think we would do the same as them.
No problem. ? I had to go up top to clear up my comment so it wouldn’t be misconstrued. Thank you. ?
To the Davis Family, The CBS46 Family and the whole Atlanta Community……”So Sorry for your Loss”. May you all be Blessed
Noriluv: When a Black person dies, especially at the hands of the police, they make sure they bring up their past transgressions,
Exactly. It’s about dehumanizing the real victim and changing the narrative and putting the victim on trial.
Watching the news cast this morning brought tears to my eyes. We lost another great Atlantian at the airport. Ex-Mayor the late great Maynard Jackson. He had a heart attack as well. They said she was making preparations for her home to move her with her. Poor mom got to marry husband and daughter at the same time.
Bingo! That’s exactly what it’s about.
Team Pepper. Great email.
“we all have a chapter in our lives that we don’t read aloud”
Well for me it’s a WHOLE BOOK and I say Preach Sista Girl Preach!!!!
I think Sandra needs to have a talk with Funky Dineva about what can happen when bloggers offend their core audience.
Thank you Pepper. You reached Sandra’s senses. I love Sandra because she provoke us to think. But you said it in a way she needed to hear which brought change.
Thank you Sandra! I really appreciate you respecting the family during this time, but also her long time community in Atlanta and elsewhere. It’s the same respect you are aiming for one day.
I was like, damn, just one chapter?!?!???
I agree with Pepper..
Nicely done Pepper!
Thank you, Pepper!
Thank you Pepper!
Sandra…
thank you for changing the mugshot pic. I did not see it, but when I heard about Amanda Davis’ passing I cried.
Amanda seemed to have a lot of issues. I don’t know what they were but we all saw the symptoms. I watched her after moving to Atlanta in the 90’s. RIP Amanda Davis.
EXACTLY. I DON’T GET WHY PEOPLE ARE THANKING SANDRA FOR HAVING SOME DECENCY, KILLING THE IGNORANCE AND FINALLY SHOWING RESPECT FOR THE DEAD, FOR A WOMEN EVEN WITH HER ISSUES WAS STILL AN INSPIRATION, ROLE MODEL FOR GIRLS/WOMEN OF COLOR, VERY ARTICULATE, HELPED OPENED DOORS FOR ALL OF THE BLACK WOMEN ON ATLANTA NEWS NOW AND SHARED HER STRUGGLES TO HELP OTHERS.SANDRA YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF FOR POSTING HER MUGSHOT FOR HER DEATH ANNOUNCEMENT. SMH!!! KARMA WON’T BE SO NICE TO YOU SANDRA…………….JENNY JONES!!!!!
Monica Kaufman and Amanda Davis were my black girl magic in my younger days. I love Monica chocolate skin and Amanda smile. They seem so calm smart and blessed to me. I remember saying that’s who I’m going to be like a combination of the two. I watch Monica beat cancer ass, and Amanda get help for her disease.
Amanda I hope you died with everything in order, and you’ll be missed by me.
Thank you for giving me Black Girl Magic??
Sorry new generation you all don’t have what I have/had…..real women role models
I understand her feelings but at the same time when you google her it’s the main pic that comes up. I had to double take because in first glance it didnt seem like a mugshot, ID pic I thought. I know hpw Sandra can be but I don’t think Sandra meant any malice. Let’s keep in mind not even death can erase your past.
I agree with Pepper, she made more positive contributions to her community more so than to focus on her mugshot. How tacky Sandra rose, we should be uplifting than focusing on the negatives in people lives. It reminded me when Marion Barry died, the media focused on. “That B#tch set me up,” than the contributions he made with SNCC which was far greater. This is what is wrong with us today, it’s so easy to tear each other down than to uplift one another.
Right, just like Funky needs to go back to finance or whatever his degree is, someone may want to start calling the nursing registries in the New Year. I understand blogging can be tiresome and the open posts are there for a reason. Even though I have no connection to ATL, I’m really feeling bad for those who looked up to this woman, class and all.
Anyway, I’ve already taken my own advice so Happy New Year and I will see you on RWS or MTO.
That was really kind and nice of Pepper and I agree with her. Although, I did see the photo Sandra posted, for me I was more saddened to learn Amanda passed away until it did not dawn on me it was a mug shot.
I still think her mug shot was beautiful being it showed her natural beauty, but the one Sandra replaced it with is even more beautiful and that was nice of Sandra to appreciate her readers and honor Pepper’s request.
Prayers for Amanda’s family and those who loves her.
