Facebook.com angered users by releasing a survey asking if pedophiles should be allowed to view photos of children under age 14 on the platform. The Guardian reports that Facebook recently asked users to outline how the company should deal with pedophiles grooming children.
One question stated:
“There are a wide range of topics and behaviors that appear on Facebook. In thinking about an ideal world where you could set Facebook’s policies, how would you handle the following: a private message in which an adult man asks a 14-year-old girl for sexual pictures.”
Another survey question asked users to select options such as, “This content should be allowed on Facebook, and I would not mind seeing it,” or “This content should be allowed on Facebook, but I don’t want to see it,” or “This content should not be allowed on Facebook, and no one should be to see it” and finally, “I have no preference on this topic.”
None of the survey options suggested users should call the police if they notice such content.
Facebook apologized after Twitter.com users tweeted out the survey questions.
Some users accused Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg of “testing the waters” to determine the right time to expose children to pedos on the platform.
Facebook’s VP of product Guy Rosen stated that the survey was “a mistake.” But it was clear to many observers that Facebook really meant it was a mistake to release the survey at this time. Facebook has asked similar survey questions in the past.
