The congregation was not pleased with Ariana Grande’s singing or the little black club dress she wore to perform during Aretha Franklin’s 6-hour homegoing services at the Greater Grace Temple in Detroit on Friday.
The 25-year-old pop singer sang off-key as she performed a rendition of Aretha’s hit single, “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman”.
Many viewers scratched their heads, wondering how Ariana got invited to sing at Aretha’s funeral when Aretha herself didn’t approve of young pop singers who lack real talent.
Many thought the dress showed a lack of respect for the Queen of Soul.
“Someone forgot to tell Ariana Grande about appropriate funeral attire at Friday’s services for Aretha Franklin,” wrote one Chron.com writer, who echoed the sentiments of Aretha’s fans. “She wore a black mini-dress that hit inches above mid-thigh. Well, actually just inches below the butt.”
Bishop Charles H. Ellis III summed up everyone’s thoughts. “When I saw Ariana Grande on the program, I thought that was something at Taco Bell!” he said.
FYI: An earlier version of this post was edited to correct the Bishop’s name.
