The surging Atlanta Dream of the Women’s National Basketball Association were just one win away from heading to the WNBA finals when they were routed 97-76 by the Washington Mystics in game 4 on Sunday. The Dream was hobbled by the return of 6-ft-5 small forward Elena Delle Donne from what appeared to be a season-ending injury in game 2.
Delle Donne, pictured above right, suffered a bone bruise in her left knee late in the 4th quarter of game 2. The Dream won that game 78-75, and it looked like they would coast to the WNBA Finals.
But after sitting out Friday’s loss to the Dream, Delle Donne returned Sunday and led the Mystics to a decisive win over our hometown team.
Brittney Sykes, pictured above left, Tiffany Hayes, Montgomery, and Jessica Breland each scored 12 points for the Dream on Sunday.
Game 5 in the best-of-5 series is today, Sept. 4, at McCamish Pavilion on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta (ESPN2, 8 p.m. ET).
Experience is on the Dream’s side with four WNBA finals appearances. The Mystics have never reached the WNBA finals in franchise history.
Go Dream!
