Pastor John Gray sparked a heated debate among women online after he said his wife “birthed” him so he could be a better man.
Pastor Gray made the controversial statements during an appearance on Atlanta’s “Sister Circle” daytime talk show on Thursday.
“The wife that I chose is better than the man that I am,” Gray told hosts Rashan Ali and Syleena Johnson, who both seemed at a loss for words.
He continued: “She’s a coat: I still can’t fit her. She’s bigger than me. She’s had to cover me while I grow up.”
But his metaphors got even more confusing when he said, “She’s a covering, not a lid. Because if a man marries a lid, she’ll stop your dream.”
Pastor Gray added: “My wife has endured more pain birthing me than both of our children.”
After the uproar among women on social media, the pastor’s wife of 26 years, Aventer Gray, posted a lengthy message on her Instagram page attempting to clarify her husband’s statements. But she only deepened the confusion.
“A RIB (wife)…covers vital organs of the body. It’s functionality is for Protection, Support, and Respiration. So, I can see things he can not,” she wrote.
But many say the roles are reversed in the Gray household, and that the pastor’s wife emasculated him by being the provider and the protection that a man should normally be for his family.
