A Philadelphia officer is under investigation for wearing a Colin Kaepernick Halloween costume consisting of an afro wig and blackface makeup.
Officer Hung Nguyen uploaded a photo to his Instagram account that showed him wearing an afro wig and dark makeup. The photo caused an uproar on social media.
Police are now investigating who took the photo of Nguyen.
When contacted by NBC10, Officer Nguyen said he was hurt and upset before hanging up the phone.
“We don’t know the nexus of the photo,” said Philadelphia Police Captain Sekou Kinebrew. “It could have been some sort of computer graphic that we see, or it could be something he physically applied on himself. That’s something we are looking to ascertain.”
Rochelle Bilal, head of a group that represents active and retired minority officers, told ABC10: “If he is the one who put the blackface on and the bush and put all of it out there, then he shouldn’t be a police officer. I don’t know authentically if it’s his image but you put it on your page and you left it there, for everybody to see.”
Nguyen, a 22-year member of the police force, is currently on desk duty pending the results of the investigation.
