R&B singer Monica surprised her fans by announcing a release date for possible new music. The single mother-of-3 announced the new release date “4-15” on her Instagram.com page late Sunday.
In her post, the 38-year-old singer wore orange overalls in a simulated jailhouse photo lineup. Monica, who is an ally of Atlanta’s lesbian community, channelled Queen Latifah’s butch lesbian character “Cleo” in the jail lineup scene from the movie Set It Off (1996).
The post sent Monica’s fans into a frenzy as they scrambled to find her new music online. No one knows whether “Aunty Mo” is dropping an album, another single or a music video to accompany her current single “Commitment”.
Some speculated that the “4-15” release date might be in reference to tonight’s season 2 premiere of T.I. & Tiny Friends and Family Hustle reality TV show, starring Monica, Toya Wright, LeToya Luckett and more.
But not everyone was pleased with Mo’s jailhouse themed promo shoot. Many fans questioned her judgment for taking jailhouse photos as a promotional stunt when so many Black males languish in prison due to sentencing disparities.
According to the Washington Post, Back males who commit the same crimes as white males are given more prison time.
