ABC is the first major television network to recognize mixed-race people in a new “black-ish” spinoff entitled “mixed-ish”.

Mixed-race people have long been identified only as Black in America, regardless of their multi-racial parents. Most people continue to cling to the archaic one-drop rule as an excuse to ignore mixed-race people as a unique race onto their own.

According to TVline.com, mixed-ish is a 1980s spinoff that focuses on a young version of Tracee Ellis Ross’ character Bow.

The spinoff follows Bow (played by newcomer Arica Himmel) and other mixed race children who are described as emotionally and intellectually brilliant. Despite their intellectual abilities, the mixed-race children are socially awkward and often face peer rejection in school.

mixed-ish also stars The Haves and the Have Nots‘ Tika Sumpter as Bow’s mom. The Champions’ Anders Holm, who played her Caucasian dad in the pilot, will be recast for the series. According to TVline.com, producers decided to take his character in a different direction.

ABC announced black-ish has been renewed for Season 6, while Yara Shahidi’s grown-ish is graduating to Season 3.
