Yara Shahidi’s sun is not burning so brightly. The former Black-ish star’s television appeal hasn’t translated well to the big screen.
According to Variety.com, Warner Bros.’ deportation-themed film The Sun Is Also a Star took in just $1.04 million at 2,073 theaters nationwide on Friday.
The Sun finished the weekend with a total box office gross of $2,600,000.
The 19-year-old who plays Zoey on teen tv drama Grown-ish stars in ‘Sun’ with Asian actor Charles Melton as two lovestruck teens who fall for each other despite their families facing deportation.
If you’re guessing that ‘Sun’ is just another leftwing propaganda film, you’re probably right. That may be one of the reasons why moviegoers avoided the movie in droves.
The other reason is Yara’s acting is not strong enough to carry a feature film with an unknown actor sharing top billing.
Tracy Oliver wrote the screenplay with Ry Russo-Young directing.
John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum dethroned Avengers: Endgame‘s reign at No. 1 with an estimated $56 million from 3,850 North American locations, according to Variety.com.
The 3rd installation of Keanu Reeves’ action movie franchise took in $22.67 million on Friday. Franchise stars Laurence Fishburne and Ian McShane returned. Keanu brought in his rumored girlfriend Halle Berry, as well as franchise newcomers Anjelica Huston, Asia Kate Dillon, and Lance Reddick.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame added another $29 million in receipts to its $2.5 billion worldwide gross to become the second highest-grossing film of all time – behind box office king Avatar with $2.78 billion.
