A Mississippi man facing divorce and a custody battle over his 3-year-old son fatally shot his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself.
The domestic incident erupted into violence on Tuesday, July 16, when Carl Robinson, 43, shot Latoya Thompson, 34, in the Williams Medical Clinic in Potts Camp, Miss. where she worked as a receptionist.
Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson said Robinson and Thompson were arguing over custody of their son, Carl Robinson Jr., when he shot his estranged wife before fatally shooting himself in the head around 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The clinic’s owner and operator Dr. Kenneth Williams and his nursing staff rushed to Thompson’s side and performed CPR. They managed to get her heart beating again but she died while waiting outside the clinic for a helicopter to transport her to a trauma hospital.
“She never did respond to us,” nurse Tammy Wiseman told WFTV. “We were doing what we could do, CPR, and when the ambulance got here she did leave with [a heart] rhythm and hope.”
A .38 caliber handgun was recovered at the scene, the Daily Journal reported.
Thompson recently filed for divorce from Robinson. He was served with divorce papers on Tuesday morning, Dickerson said.
Robinson was a candidate for the Mississippi state legislature who worked for the state’s Commission On Aging, according to WFTV.
Robinson, a Democrat, was seeking to represent District 5 in the Mississippi House of Representatives.
He is on the August 6 ballot for the Democratic primary election.
