Alicia Keys says her four-year-old son Genesis worries he will be bullied for wearing rainbow fingernail polish.

It all started in August when Alicia, 38, posted Instagram images of her son wearing fingernail polish. She captioned the images “Family time is the BEST time”.

But her followers were drawn to the little boy’s painted fingernails. “Bye with this foolishness,” wrote one disgusted follower.

“This is only my opinion no disrespect. This should have been a teaching moment. I believe each generation has demons to fight but l am from the era [I] don’t recall one man or young boy l know wanting to wear nail polish, lipstick, dresses ect. This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. I know times has changed but we must become cognizant of the fact our children and some adults emulate what we see”.

Another user wrote:

“Whatever happened to tonka trucks and baseball bats etc for a 4yr old. Dear Parents it’s time to do better. We are who God created boy, girl, man and woman and we can’t change that and it’s definitely not up for debate. As for the kids making fun of him, well what else do you expect from a kid when even they know it’s not normal. It’s really sad that this generation if children will miss out on the joy of JUST BEING A KID in this world of acceptance”.

On Tuesday, Alicia expressed her frustration in a video posted on Instagram along with the caption, “Less Labels, More Expressions. Been thinking about how over labeled and over judged we all are… can u feel me??”.

She said she took her son to the nail salon and he was excited to have his nails painted in rainbow colors, but he hesitated because he was concerned about the public reaction.

“Four years old. He’s four and he already understands the concept that someone’s gonna judge him because he chose rainbow color on his nails,” Alicia told her followers.

She told the boy to stick with his decision to paint his nails in the rainbow colors.

“You chose it, you like it, you do it,” she said before telling him that a lot of men painted their nails too. “It’s not like some strange thing that you only do,” she added.

“That made him feel better,” she said.

“But it just got me to thinking how completely judged we are all the time. The way I see it, there is masculine and feminine energies inside of us all and that’s period. That’s how it is. And it gets concerning to me that we can’t just explore these different sides of ourselves.”

Alicia then opened up about her own inner struggles to suppress her masculine side.

“Even for me myself, I oftentimes express the masculine energy that’s inside of me. And it’s very natural to me. That’s how I feel. We should be able to explore and express them however we want to.”

Needless to say, her followers went IN.

One follower wrote:

“Why would you take your son to go get his nails done at 4? He should have been with his father @aliciakeys so if your husband comes back home with a lace front wig nails and hair done and now sleeps with men is he expressing himself and his feminine energy … things to think about”.
