Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, has tested positive for coronavirus.
The news was confirmed in a statement tweeted by Trudeau’s communications director, hours after the Associated Press reported that Trudeau’s wife was experiencing flu-like symptoms.
She began experiencing a fever on Wednesday night after returning from a speaking engagement in the U.K.,” according to the statement. Sophie is in isolation and Justin Trudeau, who does not have symptoms, will also self-quarantine.
“She is feeling well, is taking all the recommended precautions and her symptoms remain mild,” the statement said. “The Prime Minister is in good health with no symptoms.”
Justin will remain in isolation for 14 days, and will not be tested because he is not exhibiting any symptoms. Doctors reportedly said there is “no risk” to the people the Prime Minister has been in contact with recently.
He will continue with duties as normal and will address Canadians on Friday.
Some people who have recovered from the virus describe it as mild to severe with fever, sore throat, headache and crushing fatigue.
For most healthy people under age 60, the novel coronavirus causes only mild symptoms such as cough, headache, sore throat and low-grade fever.
The virus can cause serious illness among the elderly population, particularly those with existing health problems such as heart and respiratory problems or diabetes.
