Basketball Hall of Fame center Wes Unseld has died at age 74. The NBA rookie of the year and MVP passed away Tuesday after a recent battle with pneumonia and other health issues, his family confirmed.
Unseld was one of only 2 players in NBA history to be named NBA rookie of the year and MVP in the same season.
The 6-foot-7 center led the Washington Wizards to its only NBA championship and was chosen one of the greatest 50 players in league history.
“Those of us who were fortunate enough to spend time with Wes knew him as a generous and thoughtful man whose strong will was matched only by his passion and drive for uplifting others,” current Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard said. “His physical prowess, undeniable talent and on-court demeanor may have struck fear in opponents throughout the NBA, but he will be remembered best as a mentor, leader and friend.”
