State Troopers who stopped to assist a Virginia man who was involved in a car crash found a decomposing body in his trunk on Sunday.
The dead man in the trunk was identified as aspiring rapper Brian Trotter, 25, who was reported missing last week in Virginia, according to the Miami Herald.
Police arrested Robert Deupree Avery Coltrain, 25, and charged him with second-degree murder and illegal transport of human remains across state lines.
Coltrain was driving north on the Palmetto Expressway near Miami Lakes when he lost control of his silver Acura and crashed on the rain-slick highway near Northwest 154th Street.
Troopers who stopped to help Coltrain detected a foul stench coming from the trunk. The car was towed to Hialeah’s Westland Mall, where troopers opened the trunk and discovered the body.
Trotter, who went by the stage name “Kent Won’t Stop,” had been shot to death.
Coltrain initially refused to speak with Miami-Dade homicide detectives. But he was allowed one phone call and investigators listening in on the call heard him apologize to Trotter’s sister. He told her the death happened in Triangle, a small town about 30 miles outside Washington, D.C.
Trotter’s family and friends had searched for him for days. They reported him missing and posted missing person flyers on social media.
Under Florida law the case will be prosecuted in Miami-Dade County, since the body was found there.
Detectives are trying to determine the motive.
