A mugshot that shows a Chicago man suffering from a serious case of facial psoriasis is going viral on social media.

Psoriasis is a chronic (longterm) skin condition caused by overactive skin cells that build up in scaly patches.

The scaly patches can be painful and itchy when the condition flares up. Psoriasis comes and goes and can last for weeks or months.

It’s rare for psoriasis to only affect the face. The condition is more commonly seen on elbows, knees, lower back, and the scalp. A similar condition called seborrheic dermatitis affects mainly the scalp and hairline,
 

What causes facial psoriasis?

There is no known cause for facial psoriasis. Doctors believe genetics and the immune system may be factors.

Psoriasis flare ups can be triggered by:

  • stress
  • sunburn
  • yeast infection
  • side effects to medications
  • cold, dry weather
  • smoking
  • alcohol use
  •  

    Treatment

    Your doctor may prescribe medications to treat psoriasis and the symptoms it causes.

    Medications include creams, ointments or foam containing mild corticosteroids, Vitamin D and retinol.
