Sesame Street introduced two “woke” new Muppets, a Black father, Elijah, and his 5-year-old son, Wes, to teach 2-year-old children about “racial literacy” and “racial justice.”
The main audience for Sesame Street is aged two, according to Wikipedia.com.
In a promo tweeted by CBS News, the father and son have a conversation with Elmo who asks why young Wes’ skin is brown. His dad, Elijah, explains the concept of melanin so a 2-year-old can understand.
“Things on the outside, like our skin color, our hair texture, our noses, our mouths and eyes, make us who we are,” says Elijah.
Sesame Workshop also released a music video to the song “Giant” where the Sesame Street Muppets celebrate their “own unique identities.”
One video features Rosita, her mother and a friend who celebrate speaking Spanish.
Sesame Workshop says toddlers aren’t too young to learn about racial differences.
“Children are not colorblind — not only do they first notice differences in race in infancy, but they also start forming their own sense of identity at a very young age,” Sesame Workshop’s Senior Vice President Dr. Jeanette Betancourt said in a statement.
