Officials are investigating a Florida group home after two foster children ran away, broke into a residence, and opened fire on deputies with an AK-47.
The two children, identified as Travis O’Brien, 12 and Nicole Jackson, 14, ran away from Florida United Methodist Children’s Home shelter in Enterprise, police say.
The children broke into a residence that was stocked with guns, including an AK-47, a handgun, a shotgun, and a large cache of ammunition.
When deputies arrived, the two children went into the garage and opened fire with the AK-47 and a shotgun.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the children fired from multiple angles and the girl allegedly threatened to kill a sergeant.
The 14-year-old girl was shot twice in the upper torso and is listed in critical condition. The boy surrendered after the girl was shot. The home sustained thousands of dollars worth of damage.
“They were coming out to kill cops,” Chitwood said during a press conference. “And where do you learn to use this weaponry? At 12, I didn’t know how to use an AK-47 or unload it and reload it or use a pump shotgun.”
The two children face criminal charges, including attempted murder on law enforcement and armed burglary.
Police had been called to the foster care group home more than 200 times in the past.
