Mathis started his stellar career singing covers of easy listening and popular standards as a child.

His father, a singer, pianist and vaudeville performer, encouraged his son to sing and play the piano at 13.

Mathis was discovered at age 19 while singing at Ann Dee’s 440 Club in San Francisco.

Music exec. George Avakian, head of A&R at Columbia Records, was on vacation near San Francisco when he heard Mathis sing at the club.

Avakian sent his record company a telegram stating: “Have found phenomenal 19-year-old boy who could go all the way. Send blank contracts.”

Mathis is best known for his popular classics “Wonderful! Wonderful!” And “Chances Are.”
