Donald J. Trump announced his third run for president in 2024. The former president made the announcement in a gilded ballroom at his Mar-A-Lago estate in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday.
“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump said, as his supporters cheered.
“Two years ago, when I left office… the world was at peace, America was prospering, and our country was on track for an amazing future – because I made big promises to the American people and, unlike other Presidents, I kept my promises.”
Trump said the Biden administration has turned the country into a “failing nation.”
“It does not have to be this way,” he said.

Trump’s wife, Melania, and his children, Eric, Don Jr. and Barron, were there to support him. But his eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, was noticeably missing. Ivanka has said she is done with politics and will focus on her children instead of helping her father seek a 2nd term in office.
MSNBC was among the mainstream media outlets that refused to carry Trump’s speech live. CNN carried Trump’s announcement live but cut away after about 20 minutes.
The New York Post relegated Trump to page 26 of the newspaper with a headline that read: “Florida Man Makes Announcement.”
Trump’s closest challenger for the Republican nomination is expected to be Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
DeSantis, who won reelection by a landslide last week, is seen as the Republican Party’s greatest hope for the future.
Political pundits point out that Trump can’t choose DeSantis as his Republican running mate because, according to electoral college rules, the President and Vice President can’t be from the same state.
There are many in the Republican Party who believe Trump’s era is over. Gov. DeSantis is preferred over Trump in Iowa and New Hampshire, according to data that shows DeSantis’ lead has widened over Trump since August.
Trump is prepared for a fight.
After announcing that he voted for DeSantis in the midterms, Trump said that if the governor decides to run for president, “I will tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering. I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife, who is really running his campaign.”
Casey DeSantis, a former news anchor, is directing DeSantis’ campaign.
Trump insists that he will win the Republican nomination, but the polls show otherwise.
