Nominations have been announced for the 2023 Oscar Awards and some bold names were shut out.
Most notably, actress Viola Davis was not nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Woman King (2022).
Davis’ collection of trophies include an Academy Award for Fences (2016), a Primetime Emmy Award and two Tony Awards. She is the most-nominated Black actress in Oscar history with four nominations.
However, the Academy wasn’t impressed with Davis’ performance as a post-menopausal general who trains female warriors to take on their male counterparts in The Woman King.
Actress Danielle Deadwyler was similarly snubbed by the Academy for her role in Till (2022).
Deadwyler portrayed Emmett Till‘s mother Mamie Till-Mobley whose pursuit of justice for the 1955 lynching of her son made her an important figure in the civil rights movement.
Actress Angela Bassett received her first nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Original Song for Rihanna‘s song, “Lift Me Up.”
Actor Tom Cruise‘s film Top Gun: Maverick was nominated six times.
Other Oscar snubs include Brad Pitt for Babylon. Pop singer Taylor Swift was ignored for her song “Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing.”
Jordan Peele‘s sci-fi/thriller Nope also did not make the cut.
