New York City Mayor Eric Adams is calling on homeowners to move illegal immigrants into their spare bedrooms.
On Monday, Adams offered to pay homeowners $110 a night to house each migrant in their homes. Some homeowners could earn $3,400 a month in the program.
“There are residents who are suffering right now because of economic challenges. They have spare rooms,” the mayor said.
The city has agreed to pay about 50 churches $125 a night to house each asylum seeker.
Parents protested NYC’s plan to house migrants in gymnasiums at their children’s public schools. City officials quickly scrapped the plan.
Park Slope resident Tim Naylor told The NY Post migrants shouldn’t be getting a “free ride” when many New Yorkers “cannot afford a decent place of their own.”
If the mayor’s plan is approved, homeowners will be paid more money to house a migrant family than to foster a child in NYC.
