Illinois passed a law forcing landlords to rent or sell properties to illegal immigrants. According to Fox News, Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed SB 1817 into law late last month. The law will go into effect in January 2024.
The law bans landlords from discriminating against immigrants on the basis of their immigration status, credit check, or background check.
The law adds “protections in the Illinois Human Rights Act for housing regarding immigration status protection and discriminatory advertising.”
“Someone’s background should not disqualify them from buying or renting property,” Democratic State Sen. Ann Gillespie said in a press release last week.
“This law sets clear boundaries, protecting the rights of immigrants and ensuring that financial institutions and service providers cannot engage in discriminatory practices,” Gillespie added.
Gillespie also said the bill bans third party loan modification service providers from checking on a potential home buyer’s immigration status.
