A Michigan teacher who was knocked out cold when a 15-year-old student hit her in the head with a metal chair will return to the classroom. The teacher chose not to file for worker’s compensation.

According to the United Federation of Teachers website, Workers’ Compensation covers full medical and paid salary for job-related injuries.

The unnamed teacher at Southwestern Classical Academy high school in Flint, Michigan was hit in the head and knocked out by a metal chair thrown by an unidentified student on Thursday. The student has since been arrested and is being held at a juvenile detention facility.

The troubled student faces two counts of felony assault. The incident happened after the teacher broke up a fight between the student and another girl. Video footage shows the teacher’s back was turned to the student who threw the metal chair.

The teacher fell to the floor and did not appear to move after she was hit.

The teacher was treated for a head injury at a local hospital and is expected to return to the classroom.

“The resilience and dedication displayed by this educator are truly commendable. Furthermore, I am heartened to inform you that the teacher has chosen to return to work,” Superintendent Kevelin Jones said in a statement.

“On the day of the teacher’s return, scholars and staff will be present to extend their warm welcome. They consider this teacher a hero, and we share in their sentiment. It is through the unity and resilience of our community that we can move forward, stronger and more determined to create a safe and supportive environment for all.”
