Memphis police are investigating a flash mob robbery of a FedEx semi-trailer during a “deliberate” traffic jam over the weekend.

Police say thieves broke into a FedEx 53-foot semi-trailer and stole dozens of packages just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cell phone video shows the thieves stealing boxes while the semi-truck was stuck in a “deliberately caused” traffic jam at the intersection of Riverport Road and Mallory Avenue.

A man in a red hoodie was seen tossing boxes out of the back of the truck while others grabbed the boxes off the roadway.

The FedEx driver says the trailer was sealed with a large safety latch, but the suspects easily broke the latch with an unknown tool.

Three suspects were arrested Sunday and some of the packages were recovered.

Police received a tip from security at the Breezy Point Apartments, where the three suspects were detained.

The entire apartment complex was reportedly on lockdown and residents were ordered to remain inside their apartments. During the lockdown, security officers say they noticed three men sitting inside a white car that reeked of marijuana smoke.

After searching the vehicle, the security guards observed boxes that were stolen from the FedEx truck.

According to FOX13 Memphis, among the stolen items found in the vehicle were four Kicker Speakers 6X9, one vehicle headlight, one 14 piece pot and pan set, a box of air lines and three Direct TV cable boxes.

FedEx released a statement on Sunday regarding the incident.

“The safety of our team members and the security of our customers’ shipments are top priorities, and we are grateful there were no serious injuries as a result of this incident. We are cooperating fully with investigating authorities and taking appropriate steps to address this matter.”
