A Chinese exchange student faces charges of breaking and entering after he walked into NBA star Steph Curry’s Atherton, California home.
18-year-old Sheng Gao was scheduled to appear at a hearing in Redwood City’s misdemeanor court on Thursday, Dec. 7, but he was a no show.
A judge has since issued a bench warrant for Gao’s arrest, CBS News reported.
District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Gao took a bus from his home in Cupertino to Curry’s exclusive neighborhood on Oct. 15.
A neighbor pointed Gao to Curry’s gated mansion. Around 5:50 p.m., Gao approached the gate, pushed the “call” and “ring” buttons on the intercom and the gate opened.
Gao then entered the property and walked through the unlocked front door. A nanny encountered Gao in the living room and demanded to know what he was doing there.
Gao asked the nanny for Curry’s autograph. The nanny quickly called the police, and Gao was detained at the residence.
He was issued a citation to appear in court on Dec. 7, but he failed to show up. Bail on his arrest warrant is set at $500.
According to CBS, the NBA superstar has close ties to China, but he doesn’t know Gao personally.
The Golden State Warriors star, 35, and his wife Ayesha Curry, 34, share daughters Riley, 11, and Ryan, 8, and son Canon, 5. The children were home at the time of the break-in.
The couple moved into the $31 million Atherton home in 2019. Earlier this year, the Currys were opposed to low-income housing being built just down the road from their mansion.
In a letter, dated January 18, 2023, the Currys said they were concerned that the housing project posed a threat to the “safety and privacy” of their children.
