A California woman says a 10-year-old boy fatally shot her son, also 10 years old, after he lost a bike race.
Brittany Frierson said the boy angrily shot and killed her son, Keith “KJ” Frierson, because he was a “sore loser”.
Frierson said she gave KJ permission to ride his bike near their home in Foothill Farms, about 16 miles northeast of Sacramento.
Less than 15 minutes later, she said, neighbors began banging on her door and shouting that her son was hurt.
“I screamed for hours after I saw my child on that ground, because I could just see that he had no chance,” Frierson said. “I just knew that my child was gone.”
Frierson said a neighbor’s child told her that the shooter angrily walked off after he lost the bike race and returned with a gun. He then shot KJ in the neck without saying a word, according to NBC News.
Police arrested the juvenile suspect on suspicion of murder. His father, Arkete Davis, 53, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal storage of a firearm, carrying a stolen loaded firearm in a vehicle, child endangerment and acting as an accessory to a crime after the fact, according to jail records obtained by NBC News.
Davis tried to get rid of the gun by tossing it in a trash can after the shooting, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
In an email, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Amar Gandhi called the shooting a “sad situation all around.”
